USA : Affirmative action debate on prestigious college admissions
#1

Went all the way to Supreme Court.

Should a small number of places be given to "disadvantaged" minorities based on their race?

Appears to be unfair on the surface that race has any bearing on the admission. However it is "positive" discrimination since these are groups who have no opportunity being given an opportunity.

Since these are additional places given to minority students who did not clear the cut off, when they are not given the places, it doesn't mean person of another race will get it.

I thought it's the same argument as saying that giving welfare to poor is unfair because it is not given to everyone.

However, one just have to look at what happened to Malaysia with affirmative action where the disparity of student quality becomes very large when you do it on such a large scale.

All these problems can be solved practically by providing an abundance of opportunities in education to developed each person to the fullest. It can be and has been done in many countries like Japan, Finland, Sweden etc.

In the US access to university aka college education is among the lowest in developed countries

The enrolment criteria should be expand to assess students based on creative achievements or social work ...if it is narrow based on exam and test scores, you attract a very narrow group and the purpose and meaning of "University" education is lost. University comes from the word "universal" .....an educated man is not one who is good at taking exams.
