Read a lot of Russia war crime news but it seem Ukraine no saint either. Think both are same. If this news is true it may lead to what the Jap officer told the soldiers in WWII surrender will be executed to motivate soldiers to fight to the last man and we know the Jap soldiers almost follow 100% during the Okinawa and other Pacific Island wars with the US. Granted now is 2022 no more 1940s but the concept is the same.

It is very difficult not to execute war prisoners, cos they need to feed the  prisoners when they themselves are lack of food.......

If I am not wrong read news they are doing POW exchange so your argument while true may not be that valid. Executing POW whatever is a war crime. But I do know in reality in the heat of war it is hard to adhere by that law. Just like in WWII Jap shoot medic
