University enrollment % Malaysia vs Singapore....
#1

Yes I know many here will say our university standards much higher and we need to stop more from having an opportunity for university education because we  can import graduates from phillipines, Malaysia and India to take up jobs.

Still, i wish I had a chance for a university education. Wearing my No.4 to hand in my appeal letter for a chance I never got was a sad memory for me.

There are so many alternative pathways to get a degree in SG nowadays for working adults. SUSS, SIM, Curtin etc. If someone has no initiative to try, he has no aptitude for uni.

After my NS  I went to work.

I am just one of the 70% at that time who did not get into university.

You can say result not good enough and so on.
After all only 30% are good enough in Singapore.

But : % is higher else where...so they have a better chance.

No need to drill into my case. Many of my friend with  much worse results than mine but family rich enough were sent overseas for their degree after they come back they could even get a job in the govt. So I am sure i can get a degree if given the chance.

But only 30% have a chance. ..and those rich enough to go elsewhere for an opportunity.

There are only a fix number of places that can accomdate 30+% ...

If one makes it someone else get push aside to be the 70% that don't make it.

It's like the COE system. When you get means someone else don't get.

Many Singaporeans' who are capable of getting degree level education don't get a chance. Some with rich parents to send them overseas can still get a degree but those who can't afford do not have this chance

Is capping Singaporean's access to university to lowest level among developed Asian countries the right thing to do?

To do this and at the same time give 35% of our university places to foreigners ....does not benefit Singaporeans'.

What happened to some of us in the past is too late to fix. But we must not stop improving the system to benefit Singaporeans in the future.

about S$14,000 for each pre-tertiary scholarship, and between S$18,000 and S$25,000 for each undergraduate scholarship.” Opposition politician Yee Jenn Jong later pursued the question further, leading Heng to say in 2015 that, “the annual number of scholarships awarded to international students at the undergraduate level has come down in recent years. Since 2012, about 900 such scholarships are awarded each year.” However, this contradicts the previous reply – the scholarships have not come down, in fact the government has been consistently giving out 900 scholarships to undergraduate international students since 2001, as Sim’s answer before bears out. Heng added that, “The annual cost per scholarship is about $25,000 on average,” which adds up to S$22.5 million a year of undergraduate scholarships for international students. Given that each student could study up to four years, and where “less than 2% of international scholars have had their scholarships terminated,” Yee calculated that the total amount could add up to S$90 million in a year.

I can identify with your grouses, you had missed the opportunity of a tertiary education, and is sore about it, but you want the younger generation to have a better chance to get tertiary education.............. Big Grin
