Unscrupulous ways companies get rid of older workers
#1

Several of my former classmates from secondary school, JC and NUS who are all accomplished professionals/managers approaching their mid-50s, were laid off in recent years under the guise of restructuring. Is this a pattern of companies targeting older employees? Would SG Talkers like to share your experiences?

My JC classmate who consistently received positive performance reviews at his company for over 2 decades, is now being reprimanded for minor offences or issues that his company previously considered too trivial to even mention. This might be a sign that his employer is preparing to release him. The company may be trying to build a case of poor performance to avoid any age discrimination claims. He appears to be targeted while younger colleagues are not.

They'll pick on minor issues and mistakes and then give bad reviews. Then demote u to pay u lesser. If cannot tahan then u quit on your own and they don't have to pay retrenchment benefits.

In reality, Singapore does not have a Union. That is why employees are never protected and often abused.

My own relative in SATS had his own unfair share as well. As he grew older, they just transferred him to the 清洁部门 where he was told “take it or leave it”. So he took it but only to be further abused where he was accused of not completing his job. The simply reply he gave was , it’s lunch time and he has to go for lunch. But that made things worse where he was given bad performance rating instead.

I'd seen both types, one was given golden handshake whsn new management took over, another one was retained after retirement with salary increments

the important thing is make yourself relevant, not dispensable

My ex- colleague wanted to take Child Care Leave, but HR said CANNOT

Because must give 2 weeks plan Notice

EH? When toddlers vomit, fall down or even have HFM Disease, how to plan ??

That is why- Die Die cannot Vote for Ng Chee Meng nor Indranee.

Why do we need 5 Mayors and 80 PAP Ministers?

When Pay And Pay says it is pro-business, that means our govt is pro-employer i.e. employees are mere digits which are dispensable.

A close friend has seen his job responsibilities suddenly reduced, and his authority as a senior manager limited - including getting assigned menial tasks. He suspects that it could be a tactic to force him out at the age of 57. This may be a sign of age discrimination. I advised him not to quit impulsively, but he doubts that HR will support his claim of prejudice by his boss.

After a new CEO came onboard, my secondary school classmate started getting excluded from meetings, social events and key projects etc. The new boss appeared to be isolating him. It was designed to make my friend feel undervalued and unwanted. He fears that as he is approaching his mid-50s, it would be almost impossible for him to find another management position if he gets laid off soon.

In the U.S., an employer cannot legally deny an employee promotion solely based on his age or perceived proximity to retirement. Reducing a staff's responsibilities or isolating him are subtle tactics to undermine his qualifications and limit his career advancement. However, this is definitely not the case in S'pore which is pro-business and pro-employer.

PAP must drive all sorts of Discrimination, esp AGE Discrimination

Because they failed to create enough jobs for the past 20 YEARS

Supply of jobs< Demand for jobs

so this gives Business more rights to abuse us

Why do we need 5 Mayors and 80 PAP Ministers?

The Govt encourages employers to retain older workers by introducing tax deductions, subsidies for approved training courses and re-employment wage credits appear good on paper. However, as long as there are no specific anti-discrimination laws in place, competent older workers are not receiving adequate protection from discrimination based on their age rather than their ability; those affected by forced lay-offs will consider making official complaints nothing but a waste of time.

Even though the Govt has long acknowledged the problem of ageism in S'pore, it has maintained that introducing anti-discriminatory laws could increase business costs and undermine our economic competitiveness. Such an assertion does not appear to be accurate since the global competitiveness of nations with anti-discrimination laws, such as the United States, Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Japan, Finland and Sweden, remains relatively stable.

PM Wong is happy so long as he continues to draw his $2 million annual salary. Older S'porean workers have to fend for themselves.

the root cause is the 60% voters.

this kind of issues already happened since 15 years ago.
NTUC unions and opposition MPs have been talking about ageism/unemployment support in parliament since 15 years ago
but PAP refused to do anything.

after 15 years, 60% continue to vote for PAP.
this coming election,60% will still continue to vote for PAP.

as long as 60% continue to vote PAP, there is no need for PAP to do anything.
if your father gives $1 millions to you, there is no need for you to borrow or work.

Based on my decades of experience in the corporate world, ageism is widely practiced by many employers who consider older workers to be more costly to hire, believe that it is tougher for them to acquire new skills and would rather invest in training and development programmes for younger staff. Without legal powers to take errant employers to task, Tafep is seen as a toothless organisation which merely advocates fairness in the workplace. Aggrieved employees will tell us that such a subdued approach is an exercise in futility.

As long as there are no specific anti-discrimination laws in place in S'pore, older workers affected by forced lay-offs will consider making official complaints a waste of time. This accounts for the decline in the number of age-related discrimination complaints that are reported.
