Germany: The EU as having a duty in the transit dispute
#1

Foreign Minister Baerbock is counting on an EU solution in the dispute over the transit ban for certain goods to Kaliningrad. Lifting the ban would not mean giving in to Putin, she said in an interview with the daily newspaper.

The government in Lithuania had imposed a transit ban on Russian goods and justified this with the sanctions. Russia protested sharply. Chancellor Olaf Scholz had previously pushed for a de-escalation of the conflict.

When asked whether Germany would also supply battle tanks - as demanded by Kyiv - Baerbock explained that this would be discussed with international partners. She emphasized that the federal government also has the responsibility to protect its own population and therefore does not want to be involved in a war.

Spain had previously stated that it wanted to examine whether German-made Leopard 2 tanks could be supplied to Ukraine.
