Now, it's still cheap, you can eat seafood there. Based on its shape, once the HSR is built, its economy will move very fast.

The National Assembly had in 2010 scrapped this same project, then estimated at $56 billion, over fears it was too costly.

But the project's potential impact has changed dramatically, Martin said, adding that there was "growing momentum" behind high-speed rail projects across Southeast Asia, where Laos and Indonesia have both completed rail lines in recent years.

"For Vietnam... it's about becoming an even stronger player in a region that's rapidly embracing high-speed rail," he said.

HSR and MRT are 2 different systems.

Can't compare this way.

HSRs are for long distance transport while MRT is not.

Distance of MRT stations is only 2 or 3 km. How to shoot to 300 km/hr say between AMK and Bishan?

In Indonesia, HSR is for running from Jakarta to Bandung or from Singapore to KL or from Beijing to Shanghai.

Most likely the project will be awarded to Chinese companies, because Japanese companies are unwilling to get involved especially after the delays of HCMC metro project caused by corruption and shortage of funding from Vietnam side. Vietnam also wants the company involved to do technology transfer and knowledge sharing, which Japan and EU countries are not willing to do.

Furthermore the cost involved will be much higher and completion date will be delayed for decades if it awards the project to Japanese or EU companies.

Why Singapore Govt didn't tender to build the speed rail in Vietnam?

Or SMRT to manage and operate the speed rail when it's completed,?
