Explainer: What is causing growing rat infestations in S'pore, and what can be done?

Pest control firms said that one macro cause is global warming, where higher temperatures increase a rat’s appetite for food as well as causes them to multiply quicker.

Overcrowding is the main reason for the increase in rat infestation in SG. When 6 million people crowd into a tiny country meant to hold no more than 3 million inhabitants, the amount of food waste will keep rodents well fed.

There are no rats at my condo owing to the presence of palm civets from the nearby forest

I heard from a colleague that she throws dry food waste directly down the rubbish chute since plastic carriers are no longer free. Even the wet food waste is discarded only using a thin plastic bag with no newspaper to line it since she stopped subscribing to the Straits Times. Imagine the amount of splatter from these bags thrown from such a height into the dumpster.

This should serve as a warning to our overpaid Ministers that overcrowding of humans will produce massive amounts of food waste, which will also lead to well-fed rats producing even more offspring.

Maybe the problem of rodents is more prevalent in HDB estates owing to overcrowding, than at the GCBs that our Ministers live in. Ridout Road has enough snakes on its premises to keep the rat problem at bay.

I don't blame the low SES for throwing food waste down the rubbish chute w/o plastic bags. When they have trouble putting food on the table, would they pay $ for carriers they used to get free at the supermarkets and stores?
