The govt will write to all financial institutions to find out if you have holdings. They do this regularly with list of new deaths.
The institutions are required to reply on this.
Once they do they are consolidated as part of the estate to be divided based on will or by the state if you did not leave a will.
This covers only local financial institutions and not foreign ones so think twice using foreign banks. If you do you better document properly for your family to recover the funds.
