Who's going to pay for the SPH scandal?
#1

For Mrs Teo, she will have to also address how SPH is going to compensate advertisers who have been cheated, including the government of Singapore, as it does not make sense for SPH Media to own up while the government dip into our reserves to help SPH pay for its financial damages, penalties and liabilities.

So it will be interesting to see who will ultimately end up paying for this scandal.

Think about it – if those executives at SPH Media, past and present, can possibly manipulate its data to give a false impression that all is well at SPH, enjoy their lucrative remunerations and benefits all these years but end up cheating both the government and advertisers, by what authority does SPH Media have to fire those involved and not make a public disclosure or make a police report?

Are they above the law to be doing so?

Are they going to pay for all the mess they have created?

As such, pending police investigation, the current senior management of SPH should be held responsible and complicit and not be allowed to destroy or tamper with evidence that may materially implicate them.

It will be interesting to see if Mr K Shanmugam, the Minister for Home Affairs, will have the moral courage and integrity to put the law above the interest of his party by bringing all those responsible for this crime and those who condoned or tried to conceal it to court.

As much of our public fund is at stake, will Mr Lawrence Wong, the Finance Minister, be able to show his political impartiality by convening a public inquiry into this whole scandal and conducting a thorough review as to whether the government should continue to support SMT when its integrity and credibility have been so badly tarnished.

In light of this scandal, isn’t it “cheaper, better & wiser” to fund WUSG instead of SMT?

SPH can support those backstreet old newspapers collectors

If those 95,000 ST copies printed excess daily instead of being destroyed, be sold @ 0.05 cents per kg to Karung Guni for recycling.

Can eventually help Karung Guni to be listed on SGX.

SPH CEO Ng Yat Chung

"Last month, the Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) announced that it posted a net loss of S$83.7 million for the financial year of 2020, which ended on 31 August (‘SPH CEO says company’s net loss due to COVID-19 while share price dives to nearly $1‘).

The net loss, which is the company’s first-ever, is in contrast with a net profit of S$213.2 million a year ago. SPH’s revenue from media advertising declined by a staggering 31.4 per cent. Revenue for the media business also shrank by 22.8 per cent.

Segments significantly hit even include its property business. SPH’s malls and purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) assets were hit by non-cash fair value losses of S$232 million. The valuation of its retail malls fell by S$196.5 million while that of its PBSA assets fell by S$31.9 million respectively.

Without the government grants of S$68.5 million through the Jobs Support Scheme, SPH’s net loss would have been even higher. SPH CEO Ng Yat Chung attributed his company’s losses to COVID-19.

“All our major business segments were severely disrupted by Covid-19. Our media business is badly affected by the collapse in advertising,” he said.

Despite losing money for the first time in the history of SPH, it was found that its CEO Ng Yat Chung was awarded with bonuses and shares. In the latest SPH’s annual report which was released recently, Ng’s received a total cash and benefits of $1,350,000 in the last FY:

He was also awarded with SPH shares in 2020:

Nothing will happen. See how the six senior executives over at Keppel got off with just a stern warning over a bribery corruption scandal costing over several hundred million dollars and even already pleaded guilty in a plea bargain in the US courts.

Go see Lim Team’s video on this.

To fix WP, they can spend alot of time and public resources to do it. But when it happen to them, it's always honest mistake and move on. So don't expect any action from the ministers in this case. Jusr like Keppel case, stern warning only.

Many sph investors would  have believed that biz was still vibrant and held on to their shares.

If the figures were not inflated, many might have sold their shares. Their losses would be lower.

Can ex shareholders sue??

Is this news related to that lack of data integrity? Another shame under a big group of elites making our news equally muddy. Frankly, SPH should shut down since there is little benefit from it.
