Who are the Hakka?

Hakka capital is Meizhou or Meizhen or Moiyen by the banks of the Mei River (the Hakka Mother River).

The Hakka Mountain Homeland refers to the mountainous area at the conjunction Guangdong, Fujian and Jiangxi Provinces.

This is a very difficult question to answer in Western terms. It is like saying you are an ancient Celt in the United Kingdom, but on the basis that the ancient Celt still exist as a people and population and has its own distinctive language, customs and traditions.

The word 'Hakka' means 'Guest' but really it means 'not a local' as the Chinese language has a play on words, giving words a different connotation from what it actually appears to be. It infers that the Hakka tribal people are not 'punti' or 'local' or indigenous to the locality that they are currently found and residing.

My Hakka ancestors originated from the Yellow River region in North China, but were driven south due to wave of invasions by the nomadic tribes in what is somewhere north of the Yellow River.

Basically we were refugees in our own country because we have left our original ancestral homeland by the Yellow River. We were forced by necessity in seeking refuge in other tribal homelands or provinces to settle in the mountains and infertile areas that the local tribes saw no utility in. Due the subsistence living that my ancestors had to endure most Hakkas then lived in poverty and many became brigands, robbers, rebels and indentured hired hands, whether as workers, servants or even 'ronin' (bodyguard or assassin for hire). If you have read the Chinese Classic 'The Water Margin' ('The Rebels of the Marshes'), you will know what I mean.

The Hakka tribe is distinctive and unique not so much in the sense that they are 'guest people' in another province in their own country, as for the fact that they have maintained their tribal integrity despite being exiled from their original homeland province for over 7-9 generations. They are almost like 'Jews' in this sense. And like the Jews, the people responsible for the preservation and maintenance of the Hakka tribe and culture are the Hakka women who are known as the Amazon Women of China.

Under the Manchus, only the Hakkas refused and defied the imperial edict for Han Chinese to show subjugation by men wearing pigtails and women having their feet bound.

The Hakka is the only Han tribal group where the women is an equal or dominant in the household affairs. As a Hakka I can tell you that the Hakka wife is the head of the household and farm, the husband is only allowed to be the 'head' for appearance sake outside the house.

Education was the only way out of poverty for the poor Hakkas in imperial times. Thus many Mandarin scholars in imperial times were Hakka.

But the pride in being a Hakka is not because we were or are poor people, are mountain people, that our women rule the roost and also do all the work while we idle around or read books or go out raiding and plundering and looting once in a while, that we are good at Chinese mountain medicinal herbs, that we all make our own rice wine, and that we eat dogs (in the Hakka homeland you see the ubiquitous dog meat restaurants everywhere) and cats and anything non-human that breathes in times of drought and famine but in the fact that we are a strong, robust and independent people that are loyal to our Hakka Chinese ancestry. This was demonstrated by the fact that in each wave of migration south, we exhumed the bones of our ancestors and transported them in dragon pots with us to our new locale of refuge.

These two features 'fight' and 'retreat', 'fight' and 'retreat' as 'tribe', taking all our belongings, lock stock and barrel, staying united as 'tribe' till the end, never giving up, never surrendering were put to good use and were reasons why we have China what it is today. Without the Hakka tribe there would be no China as we know of and it today. It would probably have been divided up like a water melon into 50 nations!

The first successful rebellion against the Manchus - the Taiping Rebellion- were instigated by Hoong Xichuan, a Hakka. It failed in the end because the Manchu Empress Dowager solicited the help (the guns) of the British, French and Americans. Had she been Chinese she would have been the worse traitor ever in Chinese history.

Sun Yat Sen the founder of the Republic that overthrew the Manchu Dynasty was Hakka. Isn't it ironical that today nobody speaks the Manchu language anywhere in the world!

Mao Tse Tung would not have succeeded in winning over the Kuomintang army of Chiang Kai Shek if it were not for his Hakka army. In fact whenever Mao had problems with is fellow Politburo committee members he threatened them by saying that if they disobeyed him he could always go back to the Jiangxi Mountains near Fujian and start another Hakka guerilla army.

Had it not been a Hakka Long March Red Army, knowing how to survive up in the mountains, how to fight and run, fight and run, and moving house and kitchen, personal effects and livestock and food and inventory, religious objects, village hospital, lock stock and barrel in retreat and always staying united as a group, there would not have been a Communist Red Army victory.Zhu De and Marshal Ye Jianyang the first and second Heads of the Red Army were Hakka.

So were many of the other leaders of the Commuinist Party - Deng Xiao Peng, Hu Yaobang. So was He Zizhen, Mao's wife from the time he fought with Chiang Kai Shek till long after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The three famous Soong Sisters of Modern Chinese history were Hakka. One married Sun Yat Sen and another Chiang Kai Shek.

Many modern SE Asian leaders are Hakka :-

Singapore - Lee Kuan Yew and his son Lee Hsien Loong

Indonesia - 4th President - Abdurrahman Wahid

Thailand - Thaksin Shinawatra, Abhisit Vejjajiva, Yingluck Shinawatra

Hong Kong - Donald Tsang, Leung Chun-ying
