Deepavali is more commonly used in Singapore as most of our early Indian immigrants originate from South India. On the other hand, Diwali is celebrated mainly in North India.

This annual Hindu celebration celebrates the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. While it’s celebrated over five days, the third day is the main event. In general, people wear their finest clothes and get together for family feasts and celebrations. Homes are decorated with beautiful rangolis and illuminated with diyas or oil lamps made from clays.

Ever heard of Theemithi or firewalking? Celebrated a week before Deepavali, it’s a Hindu religious practice where devotees walk across a pit of fire to give their thanksgiving to the goddess, Draupadi. Though it might seem dangerous, devotees are reminded of what it means to be human.

In Tamil, it's Deepavali.

In Hindi, it's Diwali.
