The ability to taste and smell food starts to deteriorate gradually after the age of 50 as the inner walls of the nose become thinner and dry, while the nerve endings degenerate. This tends to make food taste more bitter, while subtle scents become tougher to detect.

Noses also get runnier as people age when stimulated by the scent of food, while the taste buds also become less sensitive.

When people turn 60, half the taste buds that detect salty flavors disappear, which is why food cooked by old women is famously salty.

Your sense of smell and taste change as you age. Between the ages of 40 and 50, the number of taste buds decreases, and the rest begin to shrink, losing mass vital to their operation. After age 60, you may begin to lose the ability to distinguish the taste of sweet, salty, sour, and bitter foods. And you have less teeth, must wear denture.
