Why did Korea stop using Chinese characters in 1990s but wants to reintroduce now?

I was told the Koreans use Chinese characters and the exact meaning as per Chinese for each of the words. The Japanese also took the Chinese characters but may associate different means to each of the characters.
Somehow it seems Koreans were pretty related to China in ancient times?
