Do you think a loss of faith is due to negative life experiences like sickness, death of a loved one, job loss, prayers that went unanswered? Is it more to do with disillusionment with religious institutions or teachings, or the feeling that they do not align with the followers' values or understanding of the world?

The relationship between unanswered prayers and loss of faith is one major reason for followers abandoning their religion. Some feel disillusioned if their prayers for specific outcomes are not answered. This leads them to question their beliefs. Christianity emphasises that faith is about trust and relationship with God, and not just receiving rewards. Many Christians I know, find strength and comfort in God even in tough times; they see trials as opportunities for growth and development. This happens especially when God eventually delivers them from the pain, disappointment, grief and loss.

Most give up on their faith when a loved one dies prematurely; especially after they have prayed for their healing.
