For the 1st time, a local paper report indicate the 2013 LI riot was also driven partly by racism

On that fateful day, Corporal Nathan, now 44, a M'sian Certis officer of more than 13 years,had reported for his shift at Little India. It was a volunteer shift on top of his usual duties at hospitals. had reported for his shift at Little India. He was surrounded by hundreds of rioters, who were so close he could smell the stench of alcohol on their breaths.

"They were chanting in Tamil, 'Kill the woman, burn the bus,'" he said. "They told me to leave and said they didn't want to have a problem with me because I was Indian. But how could I? I told them it was my duty to protect that woman, so I could not go."

The strong stench of violence, chaos and fear remains deeply etched into the memory of ST reporters who were at the scene on 9 Dec 2013.

SGreans are well schooled and infused with value of "tolerance" and restrain since 1965....esp in the context of multiculturalism in a very very fragile tiny island state in hostile neighborhood. That for better or for worst - has become the 2nd nature of SGreans who cherish harmony above all.

Yes - it was easy for us to 2nd guess why ANY SPF officer on the ground in evening of 8 Dec 2013 had not  unhoist his revolver at the mob given his life was threatened.
The question is does firing a warning shot help quell or inflame the situation further ?

Make no mistakes, SPF member has been known to draw his weapon and open fire in situation when he is threatened...but that depends on the circumstance.
