I would not underestimate the CCP's resolve to not be humiliated again.  During the tail end of the Qing Dynasty, the country was weak due to mismanagement by the Dowager.  Today, China's military is a force to be reckoned. 

Taiwan is a province of China. It's fair enough if the PRC says Taiwan is theirs while the ROC says the whole mainland is theirs. You can argue whether ROC or PRC is the legitimate government of China, but you cannot bargain on whether Taiwan belongs to China or is INDEPENDENT.
