Why choose Tasmania? For urbanites from highly urbanised locations, not easy to find jobs there lah. Especially with their specialisations. Got other cities in Australia mah.

Can open a farm there. Then can keep many Australian cattle dogs.

I think Australia tightened immigration rules, in order to pass point test, people must live and work in rural areas other than Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane for a year to get high points to qualify. Nowadays many overseas students relocated to Tasmania after finishing university

They made the common mistake of choosing a place to live because it's cheap. No matter how cheap a place is, unless you are going for retirement, no job means no livelihood. Cheap cost of living means low wages.

Not many people there, I visited Hobart, in city centre I could only see 10 people, bars and cafes are mostly empty, population is low, only 300k across entire island, worse than Perth.  Very hard to find jobs even for jobs like waiter 500 people compete for one position. No job, no people, no business. Furthermore it is very windy and cold, colder than Melbourne in winter.  Rolleyes

25 years ago must be very cheap, houses in Melbourne cost 120k and 80k in Adelaide …Tasmania would be even cheaper. Big Grin

Nowadays farms are no longer cheap, at least 2 million, how are you going to take care the farm? Remove weeds under the hot sun will kill you. Must also repair the broken fence of a few thousands metre long.

Time changes, nowadays a lot of Sydneysiders go Tasmania buy cheap properties but I doubt they can sell as not many will buy.

Hobart is a nice city, there are 200 well maintained historical buildings in the city, much more than that in Melbourne and Sydney, there are seafood restaurants near the piers. Salamanca market only opens on weekend, a lot to see and buy.

Even if you have a vacant land, you can’t simply use it as a farm, must apply to town council for permission. There are residential zones and rural zones downunder, town council will only approve your application if it is in rural zone and has good infrastructure in place such as water supply and sewage system underground, electricity supply and fencing.

Wow, with so many conditions to comply, it is very difficult to start a farm there....so not only have the money, but must have the infrastructures in place...

Australia is very strict, people can’t just start a farm on vacant land in residential area, must apply at town council for permission and must have infrastructure built in like water supply pipes, sewage pipes, electricity supply and fencing, developing all these will cost you lots of money, and in remote area, there’s no water supply, sewage pipe and electricity line available, how to build?

It is surprisingly a nice city, very quiet and clean, I visited it in 2014…however thing has changed after 2019, a lot of property investors and foreigners who want to apply for PRs moved in there.

Better buy an existing farm, less hassle.

Then maintenance is another issue, you can’t leave the weeds grow 2 m high without doing anything, town council will issue warning letters even fine you.

As the farm is so big you must hire people to mow the grass and take care of the farm repairs every few weeks.

So with money to spend it is still a good place to migrate to....?

Town council fees are expensive, for normal houses of 600 sqm, you must pay 2-3k council fees every year, farm is so big, at least 3-4 football field large, as council fees are based on land size, you can imagine how much you have to pay to the town council for a farm each year, easily 20-30k.

The place is cosy and quiet, houses are 50% cheaper than in Melbourne, however no jobs, good for retirement …however I felt very lonely even in the city centre…it is only you and city, no one else there. I prefer bigger cities and big community.
