'Every family has different challenges': Why China’s latest policies to raise birth rate could fall short. From picturesque marriage registration sites, financial rewards, to more unorthodox tactics. China unveiled new family planning policies but young Chinese say they have other priorities.
Having children was the last thing on Ms Yu Yueqi’s mind as she waited with her husband to board a 15-hour flight that would take them from their city of Hangzhou to the Maldives for their long-awaited honeymoon. The 32-year-old newlywed admits, she hasn’t been paying close attention to ongoing policies on family planning & childcare in China.

For her, it was more about “feeling ready”, a pragmatic sentiment being increasingly echoed by more young couples & adults across country who have been choosing to delay parenthood marriage, or even having children altogether, in favour of reasons like financial stability or gender equality.

NOTED: Such attitudes Is also not working here in Spore.

It work against China’s latest efforts to boost marriage too, as birth rates - from creative measures like allowing couples to register their marriage in picturesque and so-called instagrammable spots instead of a drab govt office, to practical ones like maternity insurance, expanded childcare and tax deductions.

There’s also more unorthodox tactics. Chinese women have shared bizarre accounts of receiving random calls from government grassroot workers, asking them about their plans for pregnancy.

MediSave is national medical savings scheme  &
individuals save up for their healthcare needs in old age. Around 800,000 citizens born in 1973 or earlier are also set to receive a bonus of S$1,000-1,500 in their Central Provident Fund (CPF) accts, depending on their current savings. CPF is S'pore’s mandatory social security savings scheme helps working citizens set aside funds for retirement, housing, healthcare and other purposes.
Both MediSave & CPF bonuses will be automatically credited to citizens’ CPF Clapping accounts starting from Dec. 18.

For young Myanmar gal adjusted is pretty quickly. Starting from primary school to learning Chinese and picking up Singlish. Local habits became second nature (chope a table before you order food, obviously), and she even earned a Chinese name from my then-teacher. By the age of 10, I was speaking both English and Mandarin fluently, my cadence and accent indistinguishable from most Singaporeans. I (she) wasn’t just fitting into Singaporean culture. She was thriving. Ms Yanant Aung (second from right) flanked by her mother Hnaung and her father Win, with her brother Naing (left), on a family outing in Singapore soon after relocating here.

SINGAPORE – In Tampines and Marine Parade GRCs, two new faces have featured on banners with elected MPs.

Dr Charlene Chen and Dr Choo Pei Ling are grassroots advisers in the two constituencies respectively.

The academics are among at least seven new faces in the PAP camp who have in the last 1½ years assumed leadership roles in opposition wards and almost every PAP-held constituency with empty seats.

Up-and-comers have also been seen in Jurong, Marine Parade and Tampines GRCs, which have one vacant seat each. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam stepped down in Jurong to run for president in July 2023, while Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin and Ms Cheng Li Hui – from Marine Parade and Tampines respectively – resigned after an affair between them came to light that year.

Their respective replacements are: orthopaedic surgeon Hamid Razak; Dr Choo, an assistant professor at the Singapore Institute of Technology’s health and social sciences cluster; and Dr Chen, an assistant professor of marketing at NTU.

Two is confirmed; Dr Charlene Chen and Dr Choo Pei Ling are grassroots advisers

RIO DE JANEIRO - Singapore has to be realistic and adapt to the current shape of global trade, as it continues to work with like-minded countries to strengthen support for multilateralism, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Nov 19.

This means bringing Asean countries closer together and linking up with other regional groups, such as the Mercosur bloc in Latin America, he told reporters on the last day of the Group of 20 (G-20) summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“The reality is that trade is continuing, but it is being reconfigured,” PM Wong said in an interview to wrap up his trip, where he spoke on the impact of changes to global trade flows and why the Republic’s participation at international meetings like the G-20 summit makes a difference.
