Ng Eng Hen gave a few words of advice to his successor, expressing confidence that "next person (who will be) defence minister will be fine." Dr Ng also spoke about his time at the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), & how S'pore Armed Forces is no longer a "poison shrimp" but is "larger than a shrimp now" and "quite poisonous at this point of time"...

S'PORE - Newly minted Chua Chu Kang GRC MP Jeffrey Siow is among various potential office holders. PM Lawrence Wong is considering for the upcoming Cabinet reshuffle following S'pore’s recently concluded general election. Speaking to media on May 17, Mr Siow said: “PM is readying his Cabinet, he is building his team. I understand he has been speaking to various people in his team who would be taking up positions in the Cabinet. I am one of the people he has spoken to.” The MP for the GRC’s Brickland ward did not reveal which political office he is being considered for, saying these matters have yet to be finalised. We have to give it a bit of time. Its an important decision for (the) PM to form his team. But in discussions I have had, I am very happy he knows the experiences & the skills that I have.
He knows what I can contribute to his team, Mr Siow said at sidelines of a sustainability themed event outside Keat Hong Shopping Centre. Whatever role he thinks that I can play in his team, I will be very happy to contribute... I will give it my best,” he added.
PAP fielded 32 new candidates for 2025 General Election on May 3, the largest batch of fresh faces in decades. PM Wong is expected to announce changes to his Cabinet soon.

Promotions opportunities for political newcomers are expected to be high on PM Lawrence Wong's agenda as he forms the next Govt.

Analysts expect ‘major’ Cabinet reshuffle, with defence, finance and DPM roles, who will be ones to watch. PM Lawrence Wong is expected to bring in new political office holders and reassign key ministers as he forms his first Cabinet following PAP's strong showing.

SINGAPORE – Fourth-generation (4G) ministers are expected to take over hefty portfolios held by 3G in the upcoming Cabinet reshuffle, which is also set to bring new blood into the ranks of govt.
Several key leaders announced their retirement from politics at the recent general election, including Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat and two 3G stalwarts – Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean and Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen.
Meanwhile, new faces earmarked for govt include a number of former top civil servants who were elected into the 15th term of Parliament and are likely to take up more junior roles.

A major renewal
PM Wong first Cabinet reshuffle in 2024, he said he planned to rotate 4G ministers & “give them wider exposure experience” if his Government was re-elected. Some would be able to step up and take over from senior colleagues in due course, while some of the junior office-holders could also take on more responsibilities, he said then.
With number of ministers likely to be about the same – 19 currently – as well as 37 office-holders overall, there are several gaps left by retiring senior figures that will have to be filled. The Defence Ministry will need new office-holders, given the retirement of Dr Ng and Mr Heng Chee How, who was senior minister of state. There will likely be a replacement for DPM Heng, who held role of coordinating minister for economic policies until last May.

The new Cabinet line-up has nine new political office holders, including seven who are newly elected MPs. Eugene Tan, Associate Professor from the SMU's Yong Pung How School of Law, talks about how PM Lawrence Wong spoke about how leadership renewal was a priority for him, but the Cabinet is still made up mostly of 3G and 4G leaders. Professor Tan explains how this does not affect leadership renewal timelines.

A continuity change as experienced & fresh faces come together in PM Wong’s new Cabinet. A biggest surprise of PM Lawrence Wong’s announcement of his new Cabinet on May 21 was, without doubt, his decision not to appoint 2nd deputy pm since S'pore has by custom had two DPMs since 1980s. Alongside retention of experienced ministers in core portfolios such as finance, home affairs, foreign affairs and trade & industry, it first blush look like leadership renewal this time has mainly been at more junior levels, due to gaps left by departing 3 heavyweight ministers Mr Teo Chee Hean, Mr Heng Swee Keat and Dr Ng Eng Hen. For instance, Dr Ng’s retirement is the basis for four of the seven changes being made at the minister level, with Mr Chan Chun Sing taking over as Minister for Defence. In turn, the Education portfolio will be taken up by Mr Desmond Lee, which opens National Development to be helmed by Mr Chee Hong Tat, who was in charge of Transport. Political newcomer Jeffrey Siow is slated to take on the Transport portfolio as Acting Minister.
Setting aside question (?) of 2nd DPM for this moment, continuity belies the breadth of changes being made to the PAP’s governing team will see leadership overhauls across every ministry. Nine new office-holders were appointed on May 21 – the highest in recent history – comprising seven new MPs and two promotions from the backbench. In explaining how he arrived at his Cabinet line-up, PM Wong said a team comprises both experienced hands & younger ministers would be the strongest one for as S'pore enters a new phase marked by greater uncertainty. A world with rising trade barriers and sharper competition necessitates due to Sao Trump having a hand on tariff. Is go to had old hands at the ministries leading S'pore’s economic agenda, he said, include Ministry of Finance, remains under PM Wong, & the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI), under Deputy PM Gan Kim Yong.
A more uncertain world would also require experienced ministers at the helm of Singapore’s foreign policy and security agencies, said PM Wong, that why Dr Vivian Balakrishnan continue as Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while Mr K. Shanmugam step up as Coordinating Minister for National Security while remain as Home Affairs portfolio.
