THE Johor Baru–Singapore Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) project hit major milestone with unveiling of its first train set, bringing a long-anticipated cross-border rail service closer to reality.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Singapore’s acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow jointly launched & unveiling ceremony at Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC), where the RTS Link Train 01 was introduced to the public for the first time.

Singapore’s acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow and Malaysia’s Transport Minister Loke jointly unveiled the RTS Link Train 01 during a ceremony at the SRTC. Train, which arrived in April, is currently undergoing off-site systems integration testing, The Star reported.
Over next few months, RTS Operations Pte Ltd (RTSO), a joint venture between RTS Operations Sdn Bhd and SMRT RTS Pte Ltd, will run checks, make sure train works smoothly with key rail systems such as signalling, platform screen doors, and onboard communications.
According to RTSO chairman Datuk Khairil Anwar Ahmad, purpose of these off-site tests is to catch fix any potential issues be4 moving to on-track testing. He said this phase is expected to be completed by the 4th quarter of the year, w/Train 01 set to begin dynamic testing alongside the rest of fleet after that. Mr Khairil Anwar said trains 02 to 05 are still being assembled in Batu Gajah, Perak. Remaining 3 trains, 06, 07 & 08, will follow suit for production. Once completed, all 8 trains will be transferred to Wadi Hana Depot in Johor base for final tests & preparations before commissioning for passenger service.

M'sia Rapid Transit System Bhd (MRTS) & subsidiary MRT Corp, which oversees the Malaysian section, said dynamic testing of RTS Link train system is set for May 2026, as per the terms of the bilateral agreement. This will involve operating the train along the full alignment from Wadi Hana Depot through to the stations. Meanwhile, construction continues to make steady progress on both ends of the Causeway. According to RTSO, rail system works are now about 56% complete. Since late 2024, infrastructure companies from both M'sia & S'pore have been gradually handing over civil structures to support ongoing works. This includes laying the RTS Link tracks from Wadi Hana Depot through Bukit Chagar station & across to Woodlands North station in S'pore. Other works include installation of signalling, communications, integrated supervisory control & traction power supply systems.
MRT Corp said key structural works for the Marine Viaduct, 

Wadi Hana Depot, & Bukit Chagar Station completed as of end-May. Interior works at the depot are now 80% finished and targeted for completion by October.
Minister Loke said project faced delays after a change in the M'sian govt in 2018.
But pushed through after many rounds of negotiations. He called RTS Link a game
changer for daily commuters rail line can play a big role in supporting Johor–S'pore Special Economic Zone. “With another 18 months to go, we are now entering a very interesting phase of this project,” Minister Loke said. “It is about reducing congestion, saving time, and connecting people more seamlessly than ever before,” he added.

Acting Transport Minister Siow echoed this, noting that the RTS Link is meant to create “more choices and convenience” for travellers. In end-June, RTS Link operators said they were in the final stages of deciding fares for the cross-border service. Trains are expected to run daily from 6 a.m. to midnight once operations begin, although Minister Loke noted: Operator may also considering adjusting these hours. 
Noted: Some commuters start crossing the border ,*before 5 a.m.

East-West Line train services will be adjusted in future, due to modification works at Tanah Merah, Expo & Changi Airport stations set to start in Q3 2025. Stations are converted to *Thomson-East Coast Line stations, creating a direct MRT link from airport to the city via the future Terminal 5.

No other country in Southeast Asia comes close. Brunei ranks a distant second in the region with US$33,400?, followed by Malaysia at US$11,900. Vietnam, region's fastest-growing economies, has a GDP per person of US$4,720, according to ranking.

When adjusted for local costs, a measure known as purchasing-power parity (PPP) that better reflects living standards, Singapore overtook Switzerland to claim first place globally. 

Lower living costs compared with other wealthy nations mean Singaporeans enjoy greater purchasing power for every dollar earned. However, when working hours were factored in, the city-state dropped to eighth place , as nations such as Norway, Qatar and Denmark scored higher thanks to shorter workweeks combined with strong productivity, Mothership reported.
