SINGAPORE: Earlier in March, Singapore’s Chief of Army handed over command to his successor.
It’s a routine move that takes place every few years – except the timing has fuelled murmurings that Major-General David Neo could resign from service, enter politics and contest the imminent General Election (GE2025).
Reply

Back when the change was announced in late February, the defence ministry said MG Neo would remain in MINDEF “to complete transition and other administrative matters”. CNA has contacted him for comment.

He would not be the first senior military officer to walk that path, with the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) in particular having long sourced political talent from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

At the last election in 2020, former brigadier-generals Gan Siow Huang and Desmond Tan were fielded as PAP candidates, and have since become political office holders.

Labour chief and former minister Ng Chee Meng’s Sengkang GRC team lost to the Workers’ Party at that same polls. Five years prior, Mr Ng had resigned as Chief of Defence Force to contest GE2015, and won as part of the PAP's Pasir Ris-Punggol team.

This is a govt of S'pore plans to enhance its Assurance Package (AP) for Seniors’ Bonus to financially support its senior citizens in February 2025. The changes are meant to relieve cost-of-living pressures for poor and middle-income families & rise assistance levels for the elderly.

Higher Bonus Amounts
Around 850,000 seniors aged 55 and above in S'pore would be given cash payouts of between $200 - $300 under AP Seniors’ Bonus in Feb 2025. (This is done on Feb-2025) A substantial boost to existing support from govt has provided for the financial needs of its aging population. Thk. Clapping

S'POREPAP’s latest crop of candidates could be its youngest since 2011 election, with more women in the mix.

In all, The Straits Times has identified around 30 new faces who could stand in the upcoming election. Among them are senior civil servants, C-suite executives and long-serving grassroots volunteers. This is in line with the party’s practice of refreshing between a quarter and a third of its slate each term. As Singapore’s next Parliament will have 97 elected members, it is likely to field between 24 and 32 new faces. Clapping

The new slate is likely to reflect priorities of its secretary-general, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. In November 2024, PM Wong emphasised leadership renewal as a priority in his first speech as party leader. He has also said he plans to field more women in upcoming general election. ST’s analysis of the potential candidates showed several trends. GE2025: Why Singapore's high-flying bureaucrats are recruited into politics
In recent weeks, top ministry officials have resigned, fuelling speculation they could be fielded as potential candidates for the ruling People's Action Party in the 2025 General Election.

In recent weeks, reported resignations of six senior public servants have - like it did with Mr Lee in 2006 - led to speculation they maybe candidates for ruling People's Action Party (PAP) in the coming General Election (GE).

Among them is Mr Jeffrey Siow, 2nd permanent secretary at ministries of manpower as well as trade & industry; & Ms Goh Hanyan, a director in Ministry of Digital Development and Info.

It remains to be seen if all former public servants go on to contest in GE2025 - but if they do, the number is more or less in line with previous GEs. At the last GE in 2020, five out of 27 new faces - about 19 per cent - fielded by the PAP were public servants, excluding those from the Singapore Armed Forces. The equivalent numbers were four out of 24 (17%) at GE2015 & seven out of 24 (29%) at GE2011 ruling party’s history of mining political talent from both military & - which encompasses ministry-only civil service & other govt agencies like statutory boards - goes back decades.
