BEIJING – Whichever candidate wins the United States presidential election in November, Singapore will have to work with the American leader to ensure peace in the region, said Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen.

Speaking to reporters in Beijing on Sept 13, Dr Ng said that each country must take care of its own defence needs and work with other countries in the region to maintain peace, “whoever the leader of another country is”.

“I am sure it is productive to figure out what happens in the US... Our peace and prosperity cannot be solely dependent on the leader of another country,” he said, when asked about the possible implications of a second Donald Trump presidency. “Yes, leader of another country can precipitate events, but one have to prepare for both (candidates), and one have to work with whoever is the next president of the US.”

Dr Ng was giving an interview to Singapore and Chinese media on the sidelines of the 11th Xiangshan Forum, a high-level international security forum akin to Singapore’s Shangri-La Dialogue. His trip to Beijing from Sept 11 to 13 was his 10th visit to China as defence minister.

A squall is simply a sudden burst of strong winds that are accompanied by heavy rain. It is brief but intense & can die down as quickly as it started.

A Sumatra squall has characteristics that are specific to this region, its a line of thunderstorms that develops over Indonesia's Sumatra island or Strait of Malacca, then moves eastwards to affect Singapore and Peninsula Malaysia. crying

Most charges Iswaran is facing come under a rarely-used provision of Penal Code been part of city-state’s criminal legislation since 1871, the ST newspaper, provision makes it an offence for a public servant to accept or obtain thing of value, for free or inadequate payment, from any person with whom they involved in an official capacity.
Iswaran’s legal team is led by former PAP lawmaker Davinder Singh, a senior counsel who has often represented Lee, his late father LKY too

This is the first corruption probe involving a minister since 1986, when former Minister for National Development Teh Cheang Wan was accused of accepting 1 million Singapore dollars ($775,000) in bribes. Teh took his own life before investigations could be completed. There was public disquiet in July when it emerged that Iswaran had already been arrested and released as part of the ongoing probe by the CPIB – something the agency had neglected to mention when it first announced that the former minister was assisting with investigations.

Tan notes case has been “lingering” for mths. “Singaporeans have already moved to ‘other news more concerned about their immediate interests, such as economy, businesses & cost of living. Public sentiment towards PAP remains largely positive. Survey conducted last month by market research company Blackbox, after Wong delivered a major political speech, showed PAP enjoyed a positive rating among more than 1/2 of respondents. said Tan. “That said, there might still be some trickle-down effects, such as whether this case is a reflection of the new crop of 4G leadership S'pore’s terminology for generation of political leaders the failure of govt institutions.”

Iswaran be4 charged. He added through his lawyers not know gifts from both men regarded as close friends considered “veiled gratification”. He stepped down from office & quit PAA Party in Jan, shortly be4 formally charged. He wrote a letter to then-PM LHL Jan 17, day b4 he was charged. LHL says to determined to uphold integrity of Party &  Govt, as reputation honesty & incorruptible, Among 56 prosecution witnesses is Iswaran’s wife, trial will be till Sept 27. Polls show high levels of trust in govt. But saga emerged mths as former Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan Jin – a future PM resigned July 2023 admited to extramarital affair with fellow lawmaker, he stepped down.

Trial comes 5-mths into PM Wong term, G.election is due by Nov 2025. A Independent political observer Felix Tan considers a “small blip” record of good governance in S'pore, he warn “primary challenge for PAP govt lies in maintaining public trust,” Tan said.

What do S'poreans think?.
According to the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) – in common with the likes of Transparency International – corruption is “receiving, asking for or giving any gratification to induce a person to do a favour with a corrupt intent”.

Like this mrt... crying
Incident that caused MRT service disruption was a rare case, say experts. Under normal crying circumstances, the axle box - the component that fell off a train - does not normally become dislodged, said one expert.

Experts told CNA train fault can caused MRT disruption stretching across nine stations, now expected to last several days was a rare case.

On Wed (Sep 25), a component fell off a first-generation train, resulting in what authorities described as "extensive damage" to the train track & equipment between Clementi and Dover stations. This, in turn, caused a power trip that led to the disruption on the East-West Line, one of the two original lines built back in the eighties.
"Just like cars, (trains) have axle boxes; it’s very rare for (them) to drop. It’s very unfortunate and a very rare case,” said electrical engineering expert Teo Chor Kok.

Mr Teo said this was the first time he had heard of an axle box dropping off after becoming dislodged. Routine inspections of the train would have included the undercarriage area and the axle boxes, he added. The axle box, which houses the bearings that allow the train's wheels to rotate smoothly, is designed for heavy-duty use, said another expert.
