She is not wrong on the need for travelers to ensure that their passport have a 6mth validity as it's required by all countries.
The airline is wrong to deny the rest from boarding.
For emergencies where traveling is necessary and without a valid passport, traveler should seek out the help of embassy on case by case basis for approval letter. This should not be a common sight.

I ever travelled where my Mrs had a less than 6mth validity passport. But we needed to travel so I wrote to China embassy then. They were very nice to provide a letter so we didn't have any issue with airline and immigration.
We followed up with passport renewal in Singapore after the trip.
But like I said, this should not be the norm and you cannot expect the embassy to be doing this for you all the time.
