SINGAPORE - The year is going well for China's electric carmaker BYD, which zoomed past the US’s Tesla to become Singapore’s best-selling battery-powered brand. According to fresh statistics from the LTA, BYD registered 303 electric cars while Tesla 283. The trend is not unique to Singapore. Reuters reported in April that Tesla’s share of EV sales in California – one of its sales strongholds – had fallen to 59.6 per cent in the first quarter, down from 72.7 per cent for full-year 2022.

Thanks to its early bet on electric cars, the company is at the forefront of the automotive world’s clean energy transition. Now, as BYD looks to break into international markets, it may be building a dynasty of its own.
