As much as I would like to say the fault lies in the pedestrian, but because the driver is operating a machine therefore the driver has a greater responsibility. It seems unfair and it might even breed unhealthy habits of pedestrians walking without due care.

I agree with the comments made. I have yelled at a guy who was using his handphone and following about 4 steps behind a flout walker at the traffic junction when it was red light. The young chap looked up thinking he had to evade a bicycle ( not to his right) and continued walking.

Frankly $50 fine for the pedestrian makes me laugh. What kind of penalty is that when the amount cannot deter other potential law breakers?

So many times, those on phones walk like zombies.
Even my car park here. Cars coming, they just walk with eyes glued to phone.
Who look out for who?
People are going crazy.

No smart phone for primary school children would help to reduce the cases.

There should be a traffic awareness day, one that one faithful day any accident committed to pedestrians when they are in the wrong should be disregarded and no help rendered to them. Just run over them for jaywalking.

Problem is these jaywalkers will caused damage to the cars like dents or broken headlights which are rather expensive to repair.     Big Grin

Charge to them via auto deduction from their income or future income.

I was driving out of the basement carpark of City Square Mall and making my way towards Kitchener Road when a woman inexplicably stepped off the pavement right in front of my car. I was alert enough to slam on the brakes and was a whisker away from knocking her down. Her feeble excuse was that she was looking straight ahead at the mall and did not notice my car. However, I was not the only vehicle on that stretch of road at that time.

A woman was struck by a taxi while jaywalking at the intersection of Orchard Road and Handy Road near Dhoby Ghaut MRT station at around 3:15 am on 13 Nov 2024. Why are there so many pedestrians and drivers who risk life and limb using their phones while crossing the road and when behind the wheel?

More would be killed
Do you notice when you are walking, and there’s a guy reading his phone, he would expect you to siam him?
I never siam such person
