What happens when tariffs are imposed on Chinese goods if Donald Trump has his way. A product made in China that costs $200 to produce. The Chinese manufacturer adds a $50 mark up for profit, selling it to an American importer for $250. The importer then sells it to U.S. consumers for $325, making a profit. If an 80% tariff is imposed, the importer now pays $200 in tariffs on top of the $250 purchase price. This brings the total cost to $450. To maintain their profit margin, the importer must increase the selling price to $525. So Americans end up paying more for their purchases.
