SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A suicide prevention net on San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge that is already years behind schedule will cost about US$400 million, more than double its original price, because of problems sparked by the government agency that manages the span, the lead contractors allege.

The allegations filed Monday in state court by Shimmick Construction Co. and Danny’s Construction Co. say that changes to and flaws in the government’s net design and the lack of transparency about the deterioration of the bridge’s maintenance platforms have raised the construction price from US$142 million to at least US$398 million.

“We were alarmed to discover the District concealed significant information during the proposal phase of the Project, including extensive deterioration in certain areas of the bridge,” Shimmick said in a statement.

I think 10M should be more than enough.

How they can spend so much ??? Is just crazy.

Why waste money? Those who want to kill themselves will just find another way.

Should Spore do the same by installing safety net at HDB blocks and commercial towers?

This is stupid because there are two bridges across the bay, people can still jump to the sea from the other bridge just that Golden Gate is famous.

There are many people jump off the bridge every year, that is why they install the net, there is also a team patrolling the bridge monitoring those people wandering around the bridge to prevent people committing suicide.

To date, more than 1,800 people have plunged to their deaths from the Golden Gate Bridge, with 21 confirmed suicides last year alone, and four suspected, though no bodies were found, according to bridge officials. Two or three people jump each month.

When the body hits the surface of the water it breaks all the bones due to the high speed and great altitude, it is amazing that one or two people survived the jump, which is a miracle. The bridge is 75 m above water, which is like 30 over storey  high

How long can you live after retirement? When you are old with all sorts of sickness, no strength to get up the bed, no appetite to eat anything, poor eyesight, might as well leave this world
