The dead Myanmar helper, Piang Ngaih Don's employer, Gaiyathiri Murugayan was jailed for 30 years, which is the longest jail term meted out for a maid abuse case in S'pore, and her mother Prema Naraynasamy was handed a 14-year jail sentence. Both of them should have been jailed for life for beating, torturing and starving the maid to death.

Gaiyathiri Murugayan's husband Kevin Chelvam was a policeman who faced 4 charges, including 1 for voluntarily causing hurt by grabbing the maid's hair and another of abetment of voluntarily causing grievous hurt to her by starvation. The other 2 charges are of giving false information to another police officer and removing the home CCTV which recorded the abuse. These 3 people behaved like beasts, so should have been locked up like animals for the rest of their lives.

Dr Grace Kwan who certified Piang Ngaih Don's death, described the maid’s limbs looking like they were just skin wrapping bone and she had sunken eyes and cheeks. While waiting for paramedics and the police to arrive, Dr Kwan asked Gaiyathiri and Prema if the maid had been given any food and Prema claimed the maid ate a lot. However, the autopsy revealed there was no food in the maid’s stomach. The doctor testified that the maid had bruises around both eye sockets and on the cheeks, and her legs were swollen. In my opinion, the doctor should have been charged as well since she already noticed the condition of the helper, including signs of physical abuse and starvation during previous visits to her clinic, but did not report these to the authorities. Dr Kwan had seen Ms Piang twice before her death – once for a MOM check-up in Jan 2016, and the second time in May before her death.

Evil and cruel. She is lucky not sentenced to death.
