Singapore is basically continuing the policy that was set up during the LKY days, i.e. depend on US for security and China for economy. This policy makes sense 10 - 20 years ago, but there are some developments recently that really call into question how long we can continue like that:

1) US is a declining power and their bad track record of broken promises and military ineptitude is piling up. How much of the so called security is real and how much of it is only perceived remains to be seen.

2) In the past, due to unique circumstances and LKY's international stature, Singapore was seen as a bridge between ASEAN and US/EU. Now with declining importance of the western world and the ability for each ASEAN country to connect with the world directly, Singapore's importance in ASEAN is slowly reverting to a position that is more in line with its size. All the other ASEAN countries have less and less reason to tolerate Singapore openly asking US to come here to stir shiit.

3) As US is now facing a host of internal and external challenges, it can no longer be "generous" to its allies like the past when it was at the pinnacle of its power. We can see they are now demanding more and more from their dependent countries in terms of money and taking an ideological stance, this means the cost of any country sticking to US is increasing exponentially. How long we can continue like that remains to be seen.
