SINGAPORE: The Elections Department (ELD) and Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) said on Thursday (Aug 24) there were "inaccuracies" in Tan Kin Lian's presidential candidate broadcast speech and had to be removed.

The joint statement came after Mr Tan published a statement on Thursday morning, where he had written: "I considered these statements to be the most important parts of my speech and that IMDA did not have the authority to interpret the constitution in a narrow way and asked for these statements to be removed."
knn, then they might as well ask him to read from their ready script
"Mr Tan Kin Lian's original script had inaccuracies about the President's role. Specifically, he suggested that the President can provide guidance on the reserves' investment strategies and influence government policy," they said.

"After being notified of the inaccuracies, Mr Tan's election agent had corrected them without objection."

"Publicly, the President must speak and act in accordance with the advice of the Cabinet, especially when expressing views on legislation or government policy," the material states.

The material also highlights that the President cannot express public views on legislation or government policy without being advised to do so by the government.
The candidates also signed a voluntary undertaking on campaigning for the election in a manner that is "dignified, decorous and consistent with the President’s position", said ELD and IMDA.

TKL signed the undertaking. LL liao.
His Kingdom is shaking 🫨..

Even ordinary citizens can influence policy why can't president?

If president is to safeguard reserves how does he do it if GIC any how invest and has bad strategy.

We.are sick and tired of puppet presidents put up by the PAP...it is time for change.
ELD COCKUP on the polling slips in tanjong pagar issuing to the same person twice. This is a damn serious offence and head must roll.
However they chut pattern by attacking TKL so that people forget about their COCKUP.
Somebody should pursue on ELD COCKUP more relentlessly.

Citizens can only vote to influence policy.
Only the MP, Minister and PM can vote in Parliament to set policy.
As for President, only custodial powers. Not executive role.

TKL must fight into our Parliament. No short cut.

Yours..Cheers!!!
Since as they say the president’s role is mostly ceremonial, why waste  and demote Tharman’s intellectual skillsets to just waving hands and shaking hands?

He will be a better fit in many other places to benefit Singapore more.

Anybody can easily fit the installed President’s role.  And the Council of Presidential Advisors (CPA) is ever present to keep the president in check.

Vote a non estab president for once Big Grin

Yes you have a point 👉.
Use to be selected from the market professional status talent.
But then the 2nd key power arise. So must through voting.

As for Tharman. His International reputation in IMF is excellent in connecting with Overseas Leader as Singapore Head of State.
Partly also due to his age.

He has always been a Statesman figure rather than a Politician fighting against Opposition party.

I like Tharman too.  But to be a potential sg president is such a sheer waste of his talents and skills.

So for this reason I will be voting for a non estab president.

Political analysts have previously said that Singapore's President does not shape policies, and that Mr Tan's aim to "influence" government policies is unrealistic.

That means he is misleading the voters with empty promises.

Analysts have highlighted that the President has custodial powers but not executive powers.
That means the President can veto or block government actions in specified areas, but has no role to advance his or her own policy agenda.

The candidates also signed a voluntary undertaking on campaigning for the election in a manner that is "dignified, decorous and consistent with the President’s position", said ELD and IMDA.

"We remind all candidates not to mislead the public about the President's role," said the agencies.

Game Over for our upcoming King 🤴.
"Assoc Prof Chong said the Constitution provides for the removal of the President if they intentionally violate it, but this could “appear excessive” depending on what they did."

Warning to our future King. You can be fired! Laughing
