As the addiction and overdose crisis that has gripped the U.S. for two decades turns even deadlier, state governments are scrambling for ways to stem the destruction wrought by fentanyl and other synthetic opioids.

In statehouses across the country, lawmakers have been considering and adopting laws on two fronts: reducing the risk to users and increasing the penalties for dealing fentanyl or mixing it with other drugs. Meanwhile, Republican state attorneys general are calling for more federal action, while some GOP governors are deploying National Guard units with a mission that includes stopping the flow of fentanyl from Mexico.

......

Last year, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the nation had hit a grim milestone. For the first time, more than 100,000 Americans had died of drug overdoses over a 12-month period. About two-thirds of the deaths were linked to fentanyl and other synthetic drugs, which can be 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, heroin or prescription opioids.

......

“Fentanyl is killing Americans of all walks of life in unprecedented numbers,” Morrisey said in a statement emailed to the AP, “and the federal government must respond with full force, across the board, using every tool available to stem the tide of death.”

Supplies from Mexico. I think even if China managed to make more, they won't go direct to USA. Someone has to buy them in bulk first and then sell to USA which is Mexico in this case.
According to Donut Trump, it's China's fault!  Rotfl
I got better ideas....sell them drugs with guns lah. So fun to shoot each other.🤣🤣🤣
Rural Florida county shocked by fentanyl deaths over holiday

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A small, largely rural county west of Florida’s capital experienced an unheard-of spike in deadly drug overdoses believed to be caused by fentanyl over the July 4 weekend, with nine people dying in the latest sign that a national crisis is becoming even more far-reaching.

In all of 2021, Gadsden County had just 10 overdoses, Sheriff Morris Young said. He couldn’t recall any being fatal.

......

Then last Friday, calls to emergency services began flooding in. In addition to the nine deaths over the holiday weekend, another nine people were treated for suspected fentanyl overdoses.

......

County Commission Chairman Ron Green said among the families of victims he knew were the children of a woman in her 60s who died over the weekend.

“They didn’t even realize their mother was using again,” Green said. “This brought an alarming notice to them. Unfortunately, it’s too late.”

......

The problem has become so acute that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration issued a warning three months ago about what it called “mass-overdose events.” It cited dozens of deaths in more than a half-dozen clusters in recent months in locations ranging from the small town of Cortez, Colorado, with fewer than 9,000 residents, to major cities such as Washington, D.C.

......

Fentanyl can be 50 to 100 times more potent than heroin, and dealers lace it in with other illegal drugs to boost their addictiveness.

......

“In these last six months I’ve seen the most overdoses that I’ve ever seen since I’ve been working here,” said Jennifer Travieso, who has worked at DISC for 17 years. “It’s definitely fentanyl and it’s in drugs we wouldn’t expect it to be in, for example cocaine or marijuana or methamphetamines.”

“For the dealers, with fentanyl and other opioids, they want to make sure people get hooked to keep their sales up,” Young said.

......

“Fentanyl was not even on my radar, and that changed about 9 o’clock on Friday night,” Young said.

Ok la. The West always fighting for drugs traffickers rights. Cheers!
Its just nature take its due course .... stupiak kills
This fentanyl addiction is so bad
, people who were rescued from overdose deaths when the leave hospital first thing they do is inject themselves again.

It's like the addiction is so overwhelming, the addicts are willing to risk death to get their next hit.

I don't see any solution except compulsory rehab or eliminating Fentanyl at the source.

The other way is like the pandemic solution....living with Fentanyl ...those vulnerable to addiction die and slowly society cleanse itself of addictable members living those who are better able to avoid or resist addiction to carry on. Addiction is highly genetic in nature over time the problem will solve itself but many will die. Just like covid when we decide to live with covid means they who are weaker risk getting it and dying.
Karmic forces at work.

When someone builds resistance to an addiction, it does not mean that one is not addicted. It means that one needs more of that chemical to feel the same effect which leads to the person consuming more and more.

And a population does not build resistance to addictive drugs like they build resistance to viruses. First is that the chances of them having the next generation are a lot smaller. And the next generation will have a higher chances of disorders (one of the disorder being having a drug addiction) rather than being immune to the drug addiction. So having the situation being solved over time by letting the drugs run wild is not possible.

How deadly is Fentanyl ?

The inventor.

The original intend is to replace morphine for pain relieve during surgery. Like morphine, it bound with a receptor in the brain  to cause pain relief. But fentanyl came on faster, was much more powerful, and wasn’t as likely to cause nausea.  “Fentanyl,” Janssen later wrote, “made it possible for the first time to perform lengthy operations and, together with its successors, heralded a revolution in the operating theatre. Without this compound and its analogue, sufentanil, open-heart surgery [as performed today] would not be possible.”
