Lee can be any dialect groups, Tan or Chan also

I got one friend heng but is not hainanese.

FOO is mostly which is correct.

Liu/Liew/Low can also be other dialect groups, Andy Lau is not Hakka leh

FOO is mostly which is correct.

Must ask your friend his name in Chinese, his Heng could be different surname in Chinese writing, 邢 Heng is definitely Hainanese surname.

Lee Kuan Yew is Hakka lah! Same as Lee Hsien Loong, Hsien Yang and Wee Leng lah!

I thought Tan belongs to both Hokkien and Teochew while Chan belongs to Cantonese? And in writing they are the same in Chinese 陈.

Chines name always have meanings. For example Lee Xiao Long (Lee Small Dragon) or Lee Kim Poh (Lee Gold Treasure). So more appropriate his name should Lee Chee Ko or Cheeko Lee....... Big Grin

陈 is across all dialects, not specific to a particular one. The spellings vary depending on different dialects. It is one of the most popular Chinese family name. Some of them changed their family names from Tan/Chan to Hong/Ang 洪,that is why you see so many Angs in Spore.

陈 if appear as Tan is either Hokkien, Hainanese, Teochew, etc.
陈 if appear as Chan is definitely Cantonese

If it is ‘Tran’ it is Vietnamese Chinese
