Singapore can achieve zero emissions much quicker quitting Oil refineries to thank Tesla.

In recent years, Shell petrol stations disappearing in large numbers.

ExxonMobil and Shell oil refineries are killers.
It's like asking them to ban cigarette

The refineries are of strategic importance.

They actually want to ban the cigarette due to high cancer treatment bill but they also want the tourists coming to Sg.

Chewing gum can ban but not cigarette.
This is also another high tax revenue item.

They provide a lot of well paying jobs for Singaporeans. Moreover a lot of people with terminal illness not necessary from this industry. U got any proof? Don't just comment only.  Laughing

Yes, but achieving zero emissions is not the be all and end all objective of the government. There is no way to immediately replace the massive job loses and the accompanied economic impact that will result from suddenly closing out the refineries.

Besides direct job losses from closing EM, Shell and SRC, the marine logistics, bunkering, storage industry will immediately take a hit. The next to kena will be the vendors providing services to the refinery supply chain such as EPC, M&E firms.

The ripples will then also hit the vast number of heavy industrial firms based mostly in Tuas that require petrochemicals feed. This sort of disruption will likely lead to severe reorganizations and relocations which will cause massive damage to our secondary industry.

Last but not least, end users of fuel such as shipping, airlines, deiseal trucks and petrol cars will also likely experience price surge as they will have to start importing refined specialty fuels.

The current approach of allowing them to slowly scale down or repurpose their refinery activities towards lower carbon emission products is the right way.

All advanced countries can do it

Nope, contrary to intuition the top 15 countries with the biggest refining capacity in the world consist of a mixed bag with a majority from advanced countries.

Advanced Countries (9):
Singapore
Spain
Italy
Canada
Germany
Saudi
Japan
South Korea
US

Developing Countries (6):
Mexico
Brazil
Iran
India
China
Russia

In an ideal world any country, be it developed or developing, would like to achieve carbon neutrality ASAP, but real life policy making is often trying to navigate treacherous water by balancing competing interests while moving slowly towards a goal.
But everything will up..

Shell continuously reducing the numbers of petrol stations ..selling to Ampol.

Once EV flooding the market, it's too late for Singapore.

How HDB car owners going to share electric charging points in each block for 300-400 cars?

HDB cannot guarantee there's no power outage.

HDB have to design a car park with the required power points for the EVs................. Big Grin
