It depends on what the author means by “rich guys”. If by rich, he means guys getting a good paying PME job or having a family with a few million dollars net worth, then perhaps this cheap stunt of acting unmaterialistic might work.
 
If rich means guys in the UHNWI category and upwards then no, acting non-materialistic isn’t going to get anywhere. From what I can tell guys at this SES level usually start to lead lives somewhat detached from normal SES people, i.e. they have different hobbies, different social circles, different spending patterns, different education, different world views etc.
 
Some are very into materialistic wants while others are less so, however most largely end up marrying a spouse that is not too far away in SES from them. A middle class girl acting materialistic (purposely splurging on branded goods, fine dinning) or non-materialistic (pretending to want AA for dinner) isn’t going to cut the mustard.
