US thinks it can thread a thin line between cooperating with China on critical core issues while at the same time portray to the rest of the world and domestic voters that they are not “scared” of China.

The problem with this approach is that they are dealing with “adults” i.e. national leaders across the world. Common election tactics such as headline soundbites, photo ops and exaggerating the impact of micro policies do not work on adults.

All non-US policy makers see is out of the 4 of most senior cabinet secretaries (State, Treasury, Defence, Justice), 3 of them are desperately trying to engage and negotiate with China. Even Biden himself is “working hard” to meet up with Xi later this year.

In the meantime, the head honchos of top American corporations are busy pledging loyalty to China one after another. That effectively means the two groups with actual power to do anything are showing they want to cooperate with China not withstanding occasional skirmishes, the only remaining people doing up anti-China rhetoric is the legislature aided by various media outlets.

If the US just negotiates properly, at least Biden can go out and sell to everyone he’s a globalist who believes in everyone working together as one happy family.

Instead the jokers at Congress and mainstream media keep stirring shiit which China then conveniently uses as an excuse to suspend / terminate engagement. All the top executive and corporate officials then have no choice but to “double down” their efforts to convince the Chinese to continue engagement.

This idiocy and desperation simply damages American credibility more than it needs to be and scares all the neutral and American allies to either switch side to China or at least fence sit with various contingency plans.

This is exactly what is happening. Most of the developing world (including ASEAN) is switching sides while the remaining developed world (EU, Japan, Australia) is moving towards fence sitting.
