The chance is very very low though. To move from USD11,780 (2022 GNI per capita) to 13,845 (defined by World Bank as high income) is VERY VERY DIFFICULT. The last time they moved up US$2,000+ in GNI per capita, it took them FIVE years (2017 to 2022. Do note the pandemic impact). By 2025, the definition of high income could be a higher figure.

Malaysia like many developing countries are caught in what is know as the middle income trap.
They grow very fast and get stuck then slow down.

The reason for this is they get stuck in large swath of old economy industries that employ most of their workers and fail to move up the value chain.

For example, one of these  problems with Malaysia is that there are many people still in non industrialised agriculture like family farms and plantations. The Malaysian govt is not willing to disrupt them bacuse these people are happy to live his way of life ..in fact the govt subsidise them by buying their crops.

Instead of rushing to be a developed country and do it by disrupting the rural areas it has achieve is developed status regionally. KL for example incomes are already at developed country levels. Penang  is a developed state

By having some bifurcation is good as it gives different people various options to the life they want.

Many people don't like Dr. M but he is right when he pointed out that Singapore achieve high income growth by allowing cost of living to go up negating the gains in income..and approach he ws reluctant to take in Malaysia. What is the point of income going up 20% only to  see COE going up 50%?  And home prices up by 40%?

At the end of the day, I think it is more important whether people are living in stress ....and whether they are willing to have children to sustain the society. What is the point of a rich society that is dying from low birth rate?

GDP is PAP main key goal was  achieved at all costs ....we should look closely what we sacrificed for this...when achieve something without looking at the price society has paid to get it ...it is a hollow success...in fact you might have failed. We should not worry for Malaysia but for ourselves...

They get it close in 2012 but currency depreciation/commodity price falls foil their goal.
They need a few high value products/services that are more stable to break through.

But have to say, some developed countries technically less competence than My.
They did not produce cars, electronics and knowledge good or services
so developed status is judge solely by wage.

They can with right leaders.
