Mahathir's father, Mohamad Iskandar was of Malay and Indian descent. Mahathir's paternal grandfather came from Kerala, India. However, the wily old fox reinvented himself into a Malay since he knew that an Indian would never become a PM of Malaysia under the country's version of Apartheid. He turned his back on the Indians in Malaysia.

LETTER | Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently expressed concerns about the division among the Malays. According to him, the unity of the Malay community weakened under the leadership of his successors.

During his 22-year tenure, the Malays largely supported Umno. However, after his resignation in 2003, when he handed over power to Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Umno faced challenges and lost control of five states in the 2008 general election.

Yet it is important to recognise that the root of these issues lies with Mahathir himself. Mahathir rose to power under favourable conditions.

Zahid claims mastermind role behind move to oust Mahathir as PM. Umno president Zahid Hamidi said he was forced to take "extraordinary" measure to prevent then PM Mahathir Mohamad from banning Umno. PETALING JAYA - M'sian Deputy PM Zahid Hamidi has revealed, he was mastermind behind the effort to remove Tun Mahathir Mohamad as the prime minister.

The Umno president said he was forced to take “extraordinary” measure to prevent Dr Mahathir from banning Umno when the latter held the PM post. When it was made known Umno was going to be banned & this was confirmed by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the banning order are already on desk of the Home Minister (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) at that time,” he said.

“In that situation, of course, all Umno members, especially top Umno leadership, looked to me to find best way to ensure Umno should not be banned.” Datuk Seri Zahid reported as saying this by M'sian daily Sinar Harian in his opening speech at Cameron Highlands Umno division meeting on Aug 10. Also present at meeting was Umno vice-president Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail, who is division chief & Pahang chief minister. Dr Zahid on Aug 10 then reminded all delegates of his presidential closing speech @Umno General Assembly in 2018. I mentioned soon, we would become part of the govt, surprise & mocked even by certain individuals who no longer in Umno.“In such situation, here in Jelai, in Sungai Koyan. I must said and admit. I was mastermind behind the removal of Dr Mahathir at that time.

“For sake of Umno, it was not allow any parties to banned, humiliated, toppled or for various reason to slanders,” he said added that all remaining details of these stories would be detailed in a book later. “Earlier, I only shared 10% of it, the remaining 90% will be in my book. Usually, people will write books when they retire, but I’m not planning to retire yet as long as Umno is not the dominant party.

“As long as is the case, my colleagues and I will remain in Umno. “Hopefully, to serve as a guide for future Umno leaders who will take my place later.” To note: Dr Mahathir resigned as premier in Feb 2020, his Pakatan Harapan-led govt was ousted shortly after, with Mr Muhyiddin becoming Malaysia’s PM in March 2020. PM salary lower than six state MBs or CMs

Head of govt salaries in Sarawak, Sabah, Terengganu, and Pahang are at least RM30,000, much higher than RM22,826 received by the prime minister. As the chief executive of the country, the prime minister position is the most highly sought after political position and correspondingly, popularly believed to be the most well-remunerated.

PM Anwar Ibrahim’s decision to forgo his salary further supports this perception. But Kini News Lab’s checks on remuneration data for the federal and state governments’ top positions reveal otherwise. There is also a large gap among the states, with the salary of the chief executive in some states even higher than that of the PM.

The reason is simple - federalism.
As Malaysia is a federation of different states and territories, Parliament and state assemblies have their own jurisdictions and legislative powers, including setting the salary of the federal or state government’s cabinet or state executive council (exco) members.

In blow to PAS, BN scores massive win to take back Nenggiri

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 — Barisan Nasional’s Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani secured a morale-boosting for his coalition today, convincingly winning by-election for the Nenggiri state seat in the PAS bastion of Kelantan.

According to the Election Commission, Mohd Azmawi won the seat with a majority of 3,352 votes over his rival, Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Mohd Rizwadi Ismail from PAS, flipping the seat with a margin of victory over 4-times what PN managed in the state election last year.

Result will be additional blow for PN, which triggered by-election by stripping former Bersatu lawmaker Mohd Azizi Abu Naim of seat after he declared support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

PN has a virtual stranglehold over the Kelantan state assembly, where PAS and Bersatu control 42 out of its 45 seats now. Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan was among party leaders already claiming the victory online. At the final count, Mohd Azmawi secured 9,091 votes compared to the 5,739 his rival polled.

Mohd Azizi was one of six Bersatu MPs to switch their political loyalties, which resulted in their expulsion from PAS party. B'cos Malaysia now has an anti-party hopping clause, Kelantan State Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah declared then, so Nenggiri state seat is vacant on June 19, triggering need for a by-election within 60 days of the Election Commission being formally notified.
