ISLAMABAD, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese tech giant Huawei and Pakistan's eastern Punjab province's urban development project Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop the world's largest riverfront safe and smart city.
Under the MoU, both sides will join hands to revive the dying Ravi River into a safe and smart green city with all the latest safe and smart city technologies. The memorandum reaffirms an existing one-year healthy relationship between both entities, a handout shared by Huawei Pakistan said on Thursday.
Briefing about the project, the handout said that the parties will work together on the key projects known as smart forests and others under RUDA which will act as a developer and Huawei will be the lead technology partner.
"The Parties will cooperate on smart forests development across design and construction execution phases by latest technologies such as IoT, cloud computing, big data, AI, data center network, storage and servers, data center facility, intelligent security surveillance system, solar energy, etc," it said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurated the country's first smart forest covering 1,214 hectares of land to be developed by RUDA with technical assistance from Huawei.
Khan said that 10 million trees will be planted in the forest, adding that the growth of every plant would be monitored in collaboration with Huawei that will install sensors inside the forest to alert if anyone cuts trees.
He also appreciated RUDA and Huawei's support to build a new safe and smart river forest city and said that he is looking forward to bringing the initiative all over the country. Enditem

Huawei Mate 50 rumored to feature satellite connectivity support for SMS messaging

Huawei has been a dominating player in the smartphone maker for years but that is no longer the case. Although the company has been struggling to get a foothold after getting sanctioned by the United States, it is still trying.
The Chinese tech giant is now gearing up to launch a new flagship smartphone, dubbed Huawei Mate 50. While some details about the device have already been leaked, the latest rumor is about a unique feature of the smartphone.

A Weibo user has tipped (via GizChina) that the upcoming Huawei Mate 50 smartphone will come with support for satellite connectivity when the cellular network isn’t available. The satellite connectivity will be used to communicate via short message service (SMS) in a situation where a cellular network isn’t an option.
For this, the company has reportedly opted for the Beidou Satellite System. It is being reported that because of this new feature addition, the launch of the upcoming flagship smartphone from Huawei has been delayed.
It makes sense for the company to add this unique feature to the Mate series devices given that the Huawei Mate lineup, the second flagship series of the Chinese giant, usually comes packed with the most advanced technology available.
The satellite communication feature proves that Huawei is still trying to innovate in the smartphone space and hasn’t given up on the mobile phone business despite being severely restricted by the United States sanctions. But do note that the satellite communication feature isn’t confirmed by Huawei and it currently looks like speculation.
The Huawei P50 series smartphones, which are usually launched in the first quarter of the year, have been delayed and are now expected to get launched this month. Because of this, the Mate 50 lineup is now expected to get launched in the first half of 2022.
Apple is also expected to add satellite communication support for the iPhones using which users can text first responders and report incidents such as plane crashes, sinking boats, fires, and more. The feature, which is likely to be called “Emergency Message via Satellite” would be integrated into the Messages app as a third option after SMS and iMessage and would be identified by a gray text bubble.

But who's going to pay for the satellite service. It doesn't come cheap wor.

Not satcomm but SMS via Beidou. According to the video below (0:29), receiving a Beidou sms msg is free while sending cost RMB 29 cts per msg.
Even for China Satcomm, voice calls shouldn't be expensive as reported in a Jan 2020 news (link below), the annual subscription fee of RMB1000 comes with 720 mins of call time!

Ok, let's see how Huawei manages to squeeze an efficient antenna operating in the satellite band into their handphone. As it is with their existing phones, there is already very limited estate for such antennas and given that you need higher efficiency when communicating with satellites, it remains to be seen how such an endeavor will bear fruit.

It is SMS via Beidou and not Satcomm voice comm.
All existing phones already have built-in antenna to receive either GPS or Beidou signals so it will likely just be an enlarged version of the embedded antenna.
Also the short SMS transmission (uplink) should be be in high powered pulses that the low orbit satellites can pick up, somewhat similar to radar signals where the peak signal strength in radar pulses can be 1000 times that of the input power.
iPhone 13 is rumoured to have satellite-based SMS too according to this video:

I know it's only for SMS.
There's a very big difference between receive and transmit. For GPS or Beidou for positioning, we're in the receive mode. To transmit, we have to look at the link budget from the receiver to the transmitter. There're 2 constraints : 1). Power level of phones is low (typically about 200mW), 2). The antenna gain of HP is low (less than 2dBi, possibly even less than 0dBi). This severely limits the signal levels from reaching the satellites.
This is why for communication with satellites, you have a ground control station which is a high gain satellite dish.
I'm not saying it is not possible to do it with handphones, just that the space to put in a high gain antenna is very small. I'd like to see how they do this.
