WP MP Gerald Giam warns NTUC-PAP relationship could compromise Union independence and advocacy
In his speech during the debate on the Platform Workers Bill on Monday (9 Sept), Mr Gerald Giam, MP for Aljunied GRC from the Workers' Party (WP), highlighted concerns over the close relationship between NTUC and PAP, warning it could lead to conflicts of interest, where union leaders may prioritize political alignment over workers' needs, undermining union independence and advocacy.

It is called PAP's Union.
It is never our Union who fights for us.
That is why Ng CM will never fight for Compulsory Retrenchment 2 WEEKS pay per year of service with Dead Dragon nor MOM.

If workers' unions are not independent, i can see several issues:
1. Conflicted interests: Unions may prioritize government or employer interests over workers' needs.
2. Limited representation: Unions might not effectively represent workers' concerns or negotiate for better wages and working conditions.
3. Lack of accountability: Unions may not hold employers or the government accountable for labor rights violations.
4. Inadequate protection: Workers might not receive adequate protection from exploitation, harassment, or unfair labor practices.
5. Weakened collective bargaining: Unions' ability to negotiate with employers is compromised, leading to poor working conditions and low wages.
6. Political manipulation: Unions might be used to further political agendas rather than serve workers' interests.
7. Reduced worker trust: Workers may lose faith in unions, leading to decreased membership and participation.
8. Inhibited social dialogue: Unions' dependence on the government can stifle open discussion and debate on labor issues.
9. Limited international support: Non-independent unions might face challenges in seeking support and solidarity from international labor organizations.
10. Undermined labor rights: The lack of independent unions can erode labor rights and perpetuate unfair labor practices.
Independent unions are essential for ensuring workers' voices are heard, rights are protected, and interests are represented without undue influence or interference.

Using its control of unions the PAP actually implements policies that hurt workers to benefit businesses
1. Increase import of foreign labor to keep wages suppressed.
2. No legal requirement for business to give layoff benefits
3. No Singaporeans first policy when businesses hire workers.

An overly close relationship between the ruling party and NTUC stifles independent thought and action among union leaders. While cooperation with the govt is important, unions must be free to advocate for workers' rights without fear of political retribution. That is definitely NOT the case at the present time.

Even though unions in democratic countries like the United Kingdom support the Labour Party, they have the right to state their own positions and they have made known their own different positions on many occasions. The S'pore govt would never allow that to happen here.

Ng Chee Meng was parachuted into the job with a very high position and huge chance of being a MP with of course, high salary. In essense, he can only be YES MAN to helm that position and will not and can never be non- partisan nor neutral. The Govt commands such an Internal Defence Army to protect themselves.
