SINGAPORE - A plan more than three decades ago envisioning a reclaimed island along the length of East Coast for beachfront housing and leisure may morph into one that also takes on the task of protecting Singapore from rising sea levels.

Under the plan, the "Long Island" would stretch from Marina East to Changi.

A book documenting Singapore's 1991 Concept Plan said of the Long Island: "It will become not only a leisure centre by the sea but also a choice location for some housing development."

The country's concept plans, meant to guide development for the next 50 years, are reviewed once a decade. A review is currently ongoing, with plans slated for exhibition in the middle of this year.

This "Long Island" + the other 6 pieces to be reclaimed land are much bigger than I expected. Seems like more than twice the size of Marine Parade.

Have to agree with you on this. In fact, I believe some of us here wouldn't even see the completion of the Cross Island MRT line which will be completed long b4 the East Coast new reclamation is completed. Laughing

That's the 10mil population plan. With the island, a eventual bridge to Batam can be 2km shorter, more feasible.

Even if the world follows a low greenhouse gas pathway, global sea level will likely rise at least 12 inches (0.3 meters) above 2000 levels by 2100.

If we follow a pathway with high emissions,  a worst-case scenario of as much as 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) above 2000 levels by 2100 cannot be ruled out.

The height of the dikes in the Netherlands is above 7m so yeah, might need to build those dikes to keep the water out.
