Transport Minister opposes link between fare adjustments and train service reliability

During the 15 October parliamentary sitting, Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat rejected Workers' Party MP Gerald Giam's proposal to link fare adjustments to train service reliability. He cautioned that delaying essential fare increases needed to cover rising operating costs could lead to a chronic shortfall, ultimately negatively impacting service quality and reliability.

I remembered sometime back where the lady boss of SMRT was reported to have lack of maintenance for a period of 10 years during her rein in that position.

Which resulted a major breakdown some 10 years ago (can’t remember the exact year) and that brought her having to leave the post. She received no responsibility or accountability for what she has caused, and ironically she has received all those bonuses during her tenure and possibly when she leave her post.

And the country ended up having to pay for the repairs or replacements as well as fare increased over the past years to soften the “losses” spent in up keeping the train services.

Now with the aging trains, rail tracks, etc., high maintenance costs will be needed, and the only way is to increase fare.

But Minister now oppose the link between fare adjustments and train service reliability, don’t understand his rationale.
He seems to forget or probably refused to recall that the crux of the problems began long ago due to the lack of maintenance some 10 years ago. Therefore resulted now needed higher cost in keeping the serviceability of the train network. Just my opinion.

But former Transport Council Chairman Gerard Ee once says

Pay the fare increased first and let them improve the service

So who's right?

Fare increase -> revenue increase -> profit increase. The money go into their pocket? Shouldn't the money be used to improve rail reliability? The two are linked lah.

Tat-tat can oppose all he wants

Fares are always linked to service quality

That is Cost we pay= Service sold to us

We OVERpay for PAP Ministers= Lousy, bad & Slow Service

Why do we need 5 Mayors and 80 PAP Ministers?

In fact he is but laying grounds for the top debate on whether high salaries or politicians should be tied to performance. He basically is for the idea that politicians should get even higher pay but cannot be directly accountable for the failures. When there's success, that is directly attributed to the political leaders. Lol

Well done, not unique to sg. Just human.
