My husband was forcibly conscripted. Months later he was dead
The last time Chaw Su saw her husband was in March, when he was forcibly conscripted to fight for the army in Myanmar's civil war. Four months later, she found out he had been killed at the frontline." We were always poor and struggled," she says. "But life was much more bearable with him."
The 25-year-old widow, who had depended on her husband as the breadwinner, now has three young children to care for.

One year after launch of Op 1027, the escalation of armed conflict throughout Myanmar, & nearing 4 years of repressive rule by State Administration Council (SAC),
how much has the nature of warfare changed in Myanmar?.
The answer is—dramatically and in multiple ways, and for varied reasons. There has been military adaptation and innovation in all three branches of the Myanmar armed forces—the army, air force, and navy—and by ethnic armed organisations (EAOs) and other resistance forces under the general title of People’s Defence Forces (PDFs), in ways that have transformed the shape of fighting.
In some ways, the past three years of conflict represent a form of revolution in military affairs for EAOs, which have dramatically adapted their doctrine and technological capacity, and has seen the Sit Tat, or Myanmar military, fight an almost total war for survival. Understanding these changes in the nature of warfare is essential for analysts and the media, but also for efforts to understand the security sector and to start planning ahead for deconfliction, future peace agreements, and for human rights and accountability documentation when the timing is right.
The challenges of understanding these changes are daunting, especially as the conflict is ongoing and being waged in multiple locations and extremely complex situations. There needs to be more attention on aspects of the conflict that have a major impact on the course of the revolution and how they impact the civilian population. There are two broad and interlinked phenomena that are useful to understand the evolution of warfare since 2021 and track the trends of change amongst multiple armed actors.
Convergence of Guerrilla and Conventional Warfare: For most of Myanmar’s civil war since the 1950s, guerrilla warfare was mostly the norm across the country: small unit tactics, hit-and-run ambushes, sabotage of infrastructure, occasional storming of isolated hilltop bases. However, there were also periods of semi-conventional warfare when insurgents defended major base areas and the Sit Tat would assault them with divisional sized units: it was a major factor in the creation of the Light Infantry Divisions in the 1960s.
Offensives against Communist base areas in the Bago Yoma or northern Shan State, or against Karen National Union (KNU) bases along the Thailand-Myanmar border, were large-scale operations but brutally low-technology events, an infantry war with light artillery back up and often thousands of civilian porters to carry supplies. So much of the conflict was in isolated hill and jungle country, where domination of the highest summit determined advantage and supply lines.

So conflict was in isolated hill & jungle country, domination of the highest summit determined advantage & supply lines.
In early days of 2021 revolution followed this model, with hit-&-run ambushes in Dry Zone & EAOs, their new PDF allies striking at isolated bases. This began to change in late-2022, most dramatically when Op 1027 was launched in late 2023, most daring coup de main in Myanmar insurgent history. The Brotherhood Alliance, comprising Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), Arakan Army (AA) and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), and their constellation of alliances, have been at the forefront of this evolution.
Increasingly the conflict in northern Shan, Kachin, Karen (Kayin), and Rakhine states are transitioning from classic insurgency to either greater conventional warfare or a hybrid of unconventional war and conventional operations. What does this mean? In Myanmar’s reality, it could be seen as both symbolic and tactical: conventional wars are usually cast as two nation states in open hostilities with each other. The SAC’s multiple protagonists are seeking forms of new political arrangements that could be seen as inter-state competition within Myanmar.

Terror Grips Mogoke as Junta Unleashes Warplanes on Myanmar’s Ruby Town.
Myanmar’s military launched airstrikes on Mogoke in northern Mandalay Region on Monday, marking first attack on the ruby town since it was seized by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and allies in July, bombing targeted civilian areas, killing residents damaging infrastructure, according to locals & ethnic army.
The TNLA and People’s Defense Forces (PDF) under the civilian National Unity Government (NUG) liberated the town on July 24 after a month of attacks. The deadly airstrikes came amid TNLA efforts to rehabilitate the town, and just a day after junta chief Min Aung Hlaing arrived back from the 8th Greater Mekong Subregion Economic Cooperation Summit in Kunming, China.

The United Wa State Army (UWSA) has begun organizing a militia group in Hopang Township, northern Shan State to coordinate with its newly established administration there. This comes after the township was seized by the Brotherhood Alliance early this year and subsequently handed over to the UWSA.
U Nyi Rang, spokesperson of UWSA, confirmed the move. “But, organizing militia groups in different areas in our Wa State is a regular routine. This is happening not only in Hopang, but also in other areas in Wa State,” he said.

Can China Reverse the Tide of Myanmar’s Spring Revolution?...With Myanmar’s military teetering on the brink after losing major battles over the past year, superpower China has thrown the junta a lifeline by threatening anti-regime groups and cutting off supplies to territories they control along the border.
China’s pressure and military situation
As fighting de-escalates in northern Shan State amid pressure and threats from China, questions arise over the Spring Revolution’s fate. There is growing speculation that anti-regime groups will lose access to weapons and ammunition due to China’s blockade, allowing the regime to finally gain the upper hand.

Who's fuelling Myanmar's civil war ?.
China the biggest influence on Myanmar’s civil strife but Russia also has sway, supplying arms to the military junta. Opposition forces continue to rack up battlefield victories over Myanmar's military, questions over who outside of war-torn state is helping to fuel crisis are being asked. China is easily the most influential international actor in Myanmar, the complexity & diversity of the various insurgent groups in country, its role is complex. Less opaque is Russia, which has clearly sided with junta in its attempt to crush the opposition & is happy to sell it the military hardware to do the job.
Other international actors tend to have little sway with either the junta or opposition forces and have little impact on the ground. While China has traditionally played puppet master in northern Myanmar, there are signs the opposition victories are causing consternation, and not a little confusion, in Chinese government circles.
China likes it both ways
Beijing has supported various opposition groups for decades generally values stability over conflict since it has important strategic investments in Myanmar in gas, oil pipelines and factories. It had a good working relationship with the previous NLD-led govt of Aung San Suu Kyi but, since the 2021 coup, has often worked with the military junta that grabbed power to protect its assets.
Nevertheless, China still plays both sides.

Lions will face Chinese Taipei in their next international friendly on Nov 18. Tsutomu Ogura secured his first international win as Lions coach on Thursday (Nov 14) as Singapore came from behind to beat Myanmar 3-2 in an international friendly at the National Stadium.
Farhan Zulkifli put an experimental Singapore side in front before two quick 2nd-half goals from Ye Yint Aung and Thiha Zaw swung momentum in favour of Myanmar. But the hosts edged out the visitors with late strikes from substitutes Shawal Anuar and Naqiuddin Eunos. In front of a paltry crowd of 6,061, it was the Lions who dominated procession from the back early on and a Nazrul Nazari cross was bundled in by Farhan to put Singapore ahead.
Myanmar struggled to carve out clear-cut chances of their own, but registered their first shot on target several minutes later which was pushed away by Syazwan Buhari. With Farhan and Glenn Kweh causing problems down the flanks, Singapore came close to doubling their lead minutes before half-time.A cross from debutant Kyoga Nakamura found Farhan but he contrived to fire just wide.
