Slovakia likely to hand over MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine

Ukraine attention is focused on Moscow's grinding advances in Donbas & efforts to hold onto size territory in Kursk Oblast, 1 area of front lines continues to see daily battles but little coverage.
Ukrainian & Russian forces are locked in an ongoing fight over a series of small islands in the Dnipro River, control of which would allow Moscow's forces to intensify attacks on the embattled city of Kherson in southern Ukraine.

"Local clashes take place (for the Dnipro islands) every day," Viktor Kevliuk, a retired military officer and defense expert, told the Kyiv Independent.
"The enemy is fighting for the islands with the 61st Marine Brigade of the Northern Fleet — Ukrainian marines are countering them." Kevliuk adds that neither side is fully in control of the islands, though he says Ukraine "has the advantage" in an ongoing fight.

March 8th, a former U.S. Marine Smothers read a Forbes about a new experimental Russian FPV drone communicated with operator via a fiber optic cable rather than radio. It impossible to jam. Smothers hit to Ukraine via his Drone Reaper website immediately realized Ukrainian forces needed,” he fiber optic drones could be a game changer — but Russians had them. He took on the mission of ensuring Ukraine would field its own unjammable drones with more systems packed along front. FPVs launched by Ukraine were downed by jamming. So Ukrainian stopped trying to fly FPV attacks to protected positions, they ran into a wall of jamming. But a fiber optic FPV completely negate this type of protection.

Smothers set about building fiber optic drone. 3-mths prototype headed to Ukraine, a missionary on mission: from Shelf On To the Battlefield, knew Ukraine needed a low-cost solution. FPV drones typically cost $500. Ukrainians needed affordable solutions original design used about $360. FPV drone into an unjammable fiber-optic. Krab Tech helped design was battle ready. He set for Ukraine Aid Op, Tech United (who helped develop drone) & Defense Tech For Ukraine to govt’s Brave1 defense technology accelerator, military drone Special Detachment drone makers like Wild Hornets, Vyriy &  Dronarnia, right up to state-run Ukroboronprom, by sharing his designs providing basic hardware, Smothers encouraged everyone to try converting their own FPVs into fiber drones. Only thing he was selling was idea. He stresses that the whole project was very much a team effort. Fiber FPV into action for 1st time, drone performed as flawlessly as demo completely unaffected by jammers, FPV sent back a clear signal right up to the point of impact.

“There a great roar when it hit,” says Smothers. “And I had a feeling of accomplishment."

Zelensky announces 'successful tests' of new Ukrainian missile. President highlighted Ukraine’s progress in missile and drone development, noting that the Palianytsia, a lightweight missile-drone hybrid, has entered mass production, while the Peklo (Hell) hybrid has already been successfully deployed in combat. Zelensky confirmed on Dec. 6 that the first batch of Peklo had been delivered to Ukraine's Armed Forces.

In August, he announced Ukraine had also tested its first home-grown ballistic missile. These advancements reflect the rapid growth of Ukraine's missile program since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. While Ukraine continues to develop indigenous missile capabilities, Western partners have only recently approved the use of foreign-made missiles for strikes on Russia’s Kursk Oblast.

One of Russia’s top objectives in Ukraine right now is to eliminate the nine-mile-deep Ukrainian-held salient between Andriivka in the west and Dalnje in the east. Anchored in the north by Kurakhove and in the south by a string of villages including Kostyantynopolske, the salient is the main impediment to an uncomplicated Russian assault on Pokrovsk, a Ukrainian fortress city 25 miles to the north. As long as the Ukrainians control the Karakhove pocket, they can threaten the flanks of the Russian 90th Guards Tank Division as it marches on Pokrovsk.

The pocket itself is in danger of being cut off across its flanks. If the Russians can attack from Kostyantynopolske or some other southern village to Dachne or some other village in the north, they could encircle elements of several Ukrainian brigades. “Russian military command assesses that Russian forces will be able to close the Ukrainian pocket,” the Institute for the Study of War in Washington, D.C. noted. But the Ukrainian marine corps is determined to prove the Russian commanders wrong. In a fierce battle on or just b4 Tuesday, a Russian assault group made a move on Kostyantynopolske. The Ukrainian 37th Marine Brigade met the attackers.

The 37th Marine Brigade sent its 505th Battalion to mop up. At least one ex-British Mastiff armored truck cornered the Russians in a clutch of homes in Kostyantynopolske. Mastiff’s gunner opened fire with a .50-caliber machine gun, shredding the Russians’ shelter, Kostyantynopolske skirmish is just latest in a series of effective small-scale, combined-arms actions by Ukrainian troops defended against Russian assaults in Donetsk as well as in Kursk Oblast in western Russia.

U.S. President Joe Biden gave Ukraine the green light to attack Russian territory with ATACMS missiles in mid-November. Within days, Kyiv reportedly also launched British Storm Shadows into Russia for the first time. Russia carried out heavy guided bomb attacks against Ukraine from Nov. 1-20, Agentstvo reported, citing daily dropped at least 100 guided aerial bombs per day period, with exception of only one day, numbers fell significantly after Nov. 20. Russia dropped 138 guided bombs on Nov. 20, marking the last time Russian Aerospace Forces targeted Ukraine with over 100 bombs in a single day. Russian aircraft have launched fewer guided bombs on Ukraine in first 12 days of December, number of bombs topped 50 on only five days. The average number of bombs per day is now 40 or fewer.

Oliver Alexander, an open-source intelligence (OSINT), said the decrease was likely due to the threat long-range missile attacks posed to Russian airfields. Russian military may have been forced to move Su-34 farther than 600 km from front line to avoid ATACMS strikes, affecting "maintenance, sorties rate & flight hours," he said in a post on X.

Guided aerial bombs are precision-guided munitions that have a shorter range than missiles, but are far cheaper to produce. Zelensky lobbied aggressively for long-range permissions, in order to target Russian military airfields amid intensifying aerial attacks. Trump hints he won’t ‘abandon’ Kyiv but opposes Ukraine launching US missiles inside Russia.
