This comes amid heightened public concern following an incident involving the unmasking of NRIC numbers on a government portal, which led to anxiety about identity theft and fraud.

The Association of Banks in Singapore (ABS) announced on Thursday (19 Dec), that NRIC numbers alone cannot be used to effect payments or fund transfers. It noted that banks use multi-factor authentication for online services and additional controls for high-risk activities such as high-value fund transfers, adding new payees, or raising transfer limits.

ABS acknowledged that NRIC numbers are important for identifying customers, particularly those with identical names, and for providing efficient over-the-counter services. However, it stressed that banks are reviewing their practices to enhance security and adapt to changing needs.
In situations requiring urgent assistance, such as ongoing scams, banks sometimes use NRIC numbers to quickly identify customers and prevent fraudulent transactions.

“We seek customers’ understanding that some existing practices may be changed as a result,” ABS said. It also advised customers against using NRIC numbers or other personal information, such as their name or date of birth, as login passwords.

Similarly, the General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA) and the Life Insurance Association, Singapore (LIA), issued a joint statement on Thursday, assuring policyholders that NRIC numbers alone cannot be used to purchase, surrender, or alter policies, nor to submit claims or change payment details.

Insurers also employ multi-factor authentication and are reviewing their practices.
Incident involving unmasked NRIC numbers
https://www.theonlinecitizen.com/2024/12...-concerns/

Former CEO of Temasek, weighed in on the ongoing controversy surrounding the collection and use of Singapore’s National Registration Identity Card (NRIC) numbers.

In a Facebook post on Monday, she praised recent efforts to revise NRIC policies but highlighted the importance of balancing privacy concerns with practical use.

Her comments follow public backlash over the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority’s (ACRA) new Bizfile platform, which briefly allowed unrestricted access to full NRIC numbers.

The incident raised widespread concerns about privacy and data security, prompting apologies from government agencies and a temporary suspension of the feature. Ho Ching advised against using NRIC numbers as passwords or user IDs, likening such practices to using one’s name as a password—an easily guessable and insecure method.VIn her post, Ho Ching supported the idea that NRIC numbers should be treated as unique identifiers, describing them as a “digital name” assigned uniquely to every individual.

She argued that masking NRICs serves little purpose, as names and identifiers are not inherently confidential. Instead, she emphasised personal responsibility and robust digital hygiene to prevent misuse. She proposed that NRIC numbers should serve solely as identifiers, while separate authentication methods, such as passwords, PINs, or biometric measures, be employed for sensitive transactions.

Memo by PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan on mobilising PAS members to attend rally @Court of Appeal compound in Putrajaya went viral, Pakatan Harapan (PH) backers have ridiculed PAS for its U-turn given it was instrumental in putting the former premier behind bars during the Perikatan Nasional (PN) reign. Some reaction can be gauged on social media by #UMNONow (@UMNONow) which thk PAS for its so-called goodwill gesture.
