SINGAPORE: The conspirators of a market manipulation scheme that led to a S$8 billion (US$5.9 billion) penny stock crash in 2013 appealed their convictions and sentences before the Apex court on Monday (Mar 3).

John Soh Chee Wen, a Malaysian businessman and his ex-partner Quah Su-Ling - the former CEO of Singapore Exchange (SGX)-listed IPCO International - both received hefty sentences following their convictions in May 2022.

After a lengthy trial spanning almost 200 days and involving close to 100 prosecution witnesses, both, ahh found guilty of what was said to be the most serious case of market manipulation in S'pore.

From August 2012 to October 2013, Quah and Soh artificially inflated the share prices of three penny stocks - Blumont, Asiasons and LionGold.

According to the prosecution, the pair arranged and controlled infrastructure nominee accounts that traded among themselves and with unknowing market participants, creating an impression of demand and supply for these shares.

They concealed their involvement in these accounts and deceived financial institutions into granting hundreds of millions of dollars in financing to further the scheme.

Their plans unravelled on Oct 4, 2013 when the share prices of the three companies crashed, erasing S$8 billion in market capitalisation from SGX.

SINGAPORE – In what seems like a serendipitous coincidence, two out of the three lead actresses of Mediacorp’s upcoming blockbuster series Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story are the two Singaporeans from now-defunct K-pop girl group Skarf.

Singer-actresses Tasha Low and Ferlyn Wong join actress Chantalle Ng to form the trio of new “little Nyonyas” in the 30-part series, a spin-off and loose sequel to Channel 8’s massive 2008 hit The Little Nyonya.

The period drama, set against the backdrop of the wealthy Zhangs, a Peranakan family in 1950s to 1970s Singapore, airs on Channel 8 on March 19 at 9pm. It will also be available on Netflix and mewatch Prime from March 10 and mewatch from March 17.

At a media conference for the star-studded show on March 6, Low – who plays Xinniang, a kind and upright street urchin who is later taken in as a long-lost granddaughter of the Zhang clan – tells The Straits Times she finds it harder to be an actress than a K-pop idol.

“Acting is such a different art form. In K-pop, we’re very used to practising & honing the craft before performing onstage, whereas for acting, you have to be vulnerable in the moment,” 31yr old says.

Wong, 33, agrees.“Performing, singing and dancing are like second nature to us, but acting is completely different.”
