PKR's new leadership reflects grassroots aspirations, not nepotism, say analysts.
JOHOR BARU: The outcome of the recent Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) central leadership election has reflected the maturity of delegates in selecting a mix of experienced figures and young leaders. It has affirmed the grassroots' aspirations for continuity and reform, say analysts. Although the new leadership line-up faced various perceptions, political analysts viewed the sweeping victories by all elected leaders, particularly the spotlight on Nurul Izzah Anwar, as a clear mandate from grassroots members rather than a result of nepotism or factionalism.

Assoc Prof Dr Mazlan Ali from the Perdana Centre at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia's (UTM) Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, said the results served as a clear signal that grassroots members had full confidence in the credibility and capabilities of the new leadership to lead the party forward.
"The results reflect a balance among the winners, especially between the two blocs perceived to exist during the election — those associated with (Economy Minister) Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nurul Izzah Anwar.
"This is because both sides achieved victories. Individuals close to Rafizi also won, including two vice-presidents. Delegates did not vote solely based on blocs but evaluated candidates based on their suitability and contributions. This shows that PKR members emphasise unity," he told Bernama.
Mazlan, believing Nurul Izzah's victory was not rooted in nepotism, said delegates saw the "Princess of Reformasi" as the most suitable figure to assist Prime Minister and party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, particularly in facing upcoming state and general elections.
"Rafizi's defeat represented a clear decision by members to bring about a change in leadership. Perhaps Rafizi's campaign approach, which heavily exposed internal party issues, was among the reasons for the rejection," he said.

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) vice-chancellor (academic and international) Professor Dr Mohd Azizuddin Mohd Sani said Nurul Izzah's credibility & consistent political struggle were the main factors behind delegates' support for her. "She has long been known, and her struggle has always been consistent. Nurul Izzah is indeed qualified to hold the deputy president position. However, there are major responsibilities ahead of her, particularly in facing the 16th General Election (GE16).
"She needs to bring fresh and broader ideas to attract support, especially among young voters, although her base support among that group already exists," he said. Meanwhile, political analyst from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Prof Datuk Dr Sivamurugan Pandian said Nurul Izzah's political ideals and struggle align with the current need for change and are capable of bridging the gap between the old and new generations in the party's leadership.
Her previous achievements were also very convincing, having served as an MP and held key party positions. Based on those values, Nurul Izzah is seen as meeting the criteria to take on a bigger role," he said. Senior Lecturer in the Department of Political Science, Public Administration and Development Studies, Universiti Malaya (UM), Dr Mohammad Tawfik Yaakub said the victory of young leaders, including Nurul Izzah, an important step in rejuvenating party giving more opportunities to women & youth to hold top positions.
"For me, the victory of young leaders and Nurul Izzah is a new chapter of fresh politics brought by PKR, and a step in the right direction to produce future national leaders," he said. In the official results announced on Friday (May 23), Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, retained the president's post unopposed, while three incumbents — Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, Negeri Sembilan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, and Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang — successfully defended their vice-president positions.
Deputy Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan was the new face who joined them in the four-man vice-president line-up. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim, and Ampang division chief Syed Ahmad Syed Abdul Rahman Alhadad, better known as Altimet, were also among the faces newly elected to the central leadership council (MPP) in this election.
Meanwhile, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek successfully defended her position as Women's chief in this election, defeating Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail, while former deputy youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, who is also the political secretary to the Finance Minister, was announced as having won Youth Chief position unopposed. — Bernama

Rafizi’s X factor may help...He
Just had lost election on Friday, but his impact on party has been undeniable. His return in 2022 breathed new life into a struggling PKR following disastrous performances in Melaka and Johor state elections. Under his watch, and largely through his aggressive campaigning and policy focus, the party began to regain traction, especially among urban, middle-class, & non-Malay voters.
More than just a strategist, Rafizi, he embodied the “check-and-balance” voice within PKR. He was often the first to call out missteps, even when it meant going against the grain. That bluntness, while not always popular within the party, earned him credibility.

Rafizi said his resignation will take effect from Jun 17 and that he will be clearing leave from Wednesday until Jun 16. He added that his responsibility as Economy Minister "has been fulfilled completion of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13)", which will be presented at the upcoming parliamentary session plan emphasises "comprehensive educational reforms, including several structural changes involving Ministry of Education", he said.
"I hope the Cabinet will maintain some of the bold reforms related to Ministry of Education in RMK13, even though I will no longer be part of the Cabinet."
Efforts to enhance the robustness of Malaysia's economic structure & achieve high-income status are ongoing, he added. "We must continue to make sound long-term decisions, even if they are challenging complex, for the sake of future generations." In a statement to the media on Wednesday (May 28), Rafizi said he has submitted his resignation letter from the Cabinet to PM Anwar. "I entered politics to cultivate a new political culture grounded accountability and people's mandate. My recent defeat in PKR elections signifies I no longer possess the party's mandate to translate PKR's people-centric agenda into govt programmes," he said.
"As practised in countries that uphold democratic principles, leaders who lose in party elections should make way for the victors to assume roles in the govt."
The 47-year-old Member of Parliament for Pandan constituency had earlier pledged to resign if he lost the PKR deputy presidency. About 2 hours after Rafizi's announcement, Nik Nazmi, 43, said in a Facebook post, he submitted his resignation from Cabinet to Anwar on Wednesday and will be on leave from Thursday until Jul 3. He said his appointment to Cabinet in Dec 2022, he has "worked tirelessly to implement much-needed reforms". However, he recognised his previous position as PKR vice-president "was a key consideration in my Cabinet appointment". "As I have failed to defend my party post during its recent elections, I have decided to resign as a Minister." The Setiawangsa Member of Parliament said he looks forward to returning to the backbench & focussing on his constituency work.
After Rafizi's defeat last Friday night, United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) chief Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party would not ask for ministerial posts, but would gladly accept them if given. “That (possible vacant position) is their (PKR’s) right. We cannot interfere,
we know the limits to our requests. But, if the post is given to UMNO, we will accept it with open arms," said Ahmad Zahid, who is a deputy prime minister.
UMNO is a key partner in Anwar's unity govt. Analysts earlier told CNA that Nurul Izzah's victory and Rafizi's subsequent resignation would leave Anwar with a political conundrum due to heightened division that could see Rafizi and his key supporters leaving the party. They drew parallels to how Anwar’s former Number Two Azmin Ali resigned from PKR in 2020.
Rafizi has no shortage of suitors. Annuar Musa, supreme council member of the biggest opposition (green party)
Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), has urged Rafizi via a statement on his Facebook page to join the opposition coalition for the next national polls due by 2028. At same time, Anwar will have a hole to fill in his Cabinet, with Economy Ministry spearheading key initiatives like Johor-S'pore Special Economic Zone.
Nurul Izzah has said she is not keen on a Cabinet post if she clinches the deputy presidency. While Anwar may be keen for her to join the Cabinet to shore up PKR’s quota, doing so could exacerbate nepotism claims, observers said.
“I RESPECT HIM DEEPLY”, SAYS NURUL IZZAH. Posting on Facebook. In Rafizi’s statement, Nurul Izzah described him as have a mind that is “source of strength”, whether in govt or not. She said his ideas will not be forgotten will continue to be refined & implemented, they are “what is best for M'sia”. She said he introduced ideas & policies have reshaped our discourse, especially in governance, transparency and economic justice. I respect him deeply,” she wrote. Nurul Izzah said that her focus remains on strengthening the party by ensuring its top leadership is accountable.
“It is our responsibility to remind each other that we must not stray from the values and principles we have long upheld and fought for,” she said. Nurul Izzah said the party would be introducing mandatory training for all party leaders on laws related to anti-money laundering, corruption and tax compliance, at both the central and branch levels. In a statement released on Wednesday night, M'sia's PMs' Office said PM Anwar had received resignation and leave requests from both Rafizi and Niz Nazmi. It added that upon careful consideration, PM Anwar agreed to approve the request for leave. "Any further decision associated with this will be announced subsequently by the PM" the statement said.

Rafizi resigned from his post as economy minister yesterday, saying that his loss to Nurul Izzah Anwar in the recent PKR deputy presidency race meant he no longer had the mandate to implement the party’s reform agenda, on Nik Nazmi, who also failed to retain his position as PKR vice-president in the latest party polls, announced his resignation shortly after, citing similar reasons.
