Ukrainian anti-aircraft gunners shot down a Russian Orlan drone carrying two first-person-view (FPV) drones under its wings for the first time, the 118th Separate Mechanized Brigade reported on Aug. 22. This marks first time the Ukrainian military has destroyed a so-called "mother drone" carrying other UAVs, brigade claimed. "Anti-aircraft gunners from the 118th Separate Mechanized Brigade destroyed an enemy Orlan drone carrying two FPV drones under its wings," the unit said in a Facebook post. "Prior to this, the pilots of the pursuit platoon had already shot down dozens of enemy reconnaissance drones — Orlan, Zala, and Supercam — but this was the first time they had managed to destroy a mother drone

Ukrainian attacks on Russian oil refineries has sent gasoline prices in Russia to record highs, despite the govt banning petrol exports to cope with the crunch. Ukraine is focusing drone attacks on refineries, pumping stations and fuel trains in an effort to hurt the Russian war machine - but also to disrupt daily life in Russia. Summer sees peak demand among Russia’s drivers and farmers for petrol.. Ukrainian drones have struck at least ten key Russian energy facilities this month alone, according to a CNN tally of attacks.

İn Sumy Ukrainian forces have seized the initiative, moving from a defensive posture to a broad counteroffensive that is steadily reshaping frontline. The momentum shift is allowing Ukrainian units to dictate pace of battle, breaking down Russian cohesion & allowing elite enemy forces to be encircled. Ukrainian forces started successfully advancing near: Kindrativka, Andriivka, Oleksiivka, Yablunivka, Yunakivka, Euromaidan outlet recalls. They supported by a series of air strikes Russian concentrations of forces effective disruption enemy reinforcement attempts, with the Russians trying to cross a local lake being targeted by drones.
Russian analyst embedded w/Russian forces in this sector reported Russians suffering from glaring issues on defensive cohesion: Fire coordination is ineffective against Ukrainian assaults. Requested reinforcements often never arrive. Counterattacks are delayed by several days.Ukrainian commanders are exploiting these weaknesses with precision, forcing Russians into a defensive posture they cannot maintain.
Russia’s operational mindset, long focused on continuous offensives, appears to have eroded its ability to mount an effective defense. In pursuit of gains on summer offensive, Russian commanders committed vast reserves of armor manpower, leaving little left to plug gaps when momentum stalled fight in Kursk was particularly costly: armored vehicles were destroyed in huge numbers, forcing Russia to rely on infantry, motorcycles, and small assault teams. Now in Sumy, most Russian soldiers move on foot, taking them days to reach the frontline, and they can’t respond effectively when Ukrainians attack, Euromaidan Press says.
Additionally, North Korean troops were annihilated by Ukrainian cluster munitions 200 soldiers at a time, and the Russian infantry that remains is exhausted, making the Russian Sumy front thinly manned and dangerously vulnerable.
Faced with this unfolding crisis, Russian command has attempted to reinforce the sector with a battalion from the 810th Naval Infantry Brigade, tasked with stabilizing Kindrativka. Yet this solution may only compound the problem, as this Russian brigade suffered devastating losses during the Kursk battles and is now believed to be operating at only 35 to 45% of its nominal combat strength. Rather than deploying a cohesive, intact battalion, the likely reality is a composite force cobbled together from remnants of different units, a halfhearted measure.

Ukraine dealt a decisive blow to Russia’s summer offensive in Sumy Oblast. On August 16–17, Lieutenant General Esedulla Abachev, deputy commander of Russia’s Several grouping, was struck by Ukrainian FPV drones, he traveling the Rylsk–Khomutovka highway & attack left him with very catastrophic injuries, including the amputation of his arm and leg, his is evacuation to Moscow’s Central Clinical Hospital. Strike follows Ukraine’s destruction of Yunakivka bridge on August 1, a route for Russian logistics. Bridge gone, Russian forcs left divided & vulnerable. By late August, Ukraine had recaptured villages like Bezsalivd & pushed Russian units back few miles from border. Analysts describe Sumy front as collapsing, w/Russia’s 50,000-strong forces.

Two Ukrainian MiG-29 pilots launch a high-risk mission deep into Russian airspace. Their target: a hidden drone command post near Tyotkino responsible for coordinating weeks of deadly UAV strikes. Using terrain masking and gaps in Russian radar coverage, they slip across the border-only to trigger a chain reaction of escalating threats.
Russian S-400 radars, Su-30 fighters, Tor-M2 and Buk-M3 SAM batteries, and even Tornets-E acoustic sensors begin hunting them. As the sky turns lethal, a Bayraktar TB2 drone provides real-time overwatch and distraction, luring air defenses into revealing their positions.
What follows is a desperate aerial chess match of radar locks, missile launches, evasive maneuvers, and last-second countermeasures.
The MiG-29s release AASM Hammer bombs under fire, striking hardened drone control centers and crippling Russia’s aerial reconnaissance operations in the region.
As they flee with fuel nearly gone and helicopters rising in their path, the exhausted pilots dodge a final wall of S-400 missiles and cross into friendly skies-mission accomplished. This is the story of how precision, deception, and sheer nerve combined to strike a blow where it hurt most.

Ukraine’s elite drone commanders rank high on Russia’s most wanted list. To meet one. Yurih Fedorenko, known by his call sign Achilles, is the commander of the 429th Separate Regiment of Unmanned Systems, which goes by the same nickname. At 34, Fedorenko is considered one of the rising stars of the Ukrainian military.
“I’m now responsible for several thousand soldiers,” said Fedorenko, leading the way deeper into forest toward a small clearing, well off any path. “That’s why these meetings are a bit more complicated than they used to be.” Just days earlier, Russian military had reportedly planned to kill him & several other drone commanders with an airstrike in eastern Ukraine. Claim was made on Facebook by Robert “Magyar” Brovdi, commander of entire Ukrainian Unmanned Systems Forces. “We valued your attempt to take us all out yesterday. Keep smoking your bamboo,” he wrote beneath a group photo includes Fedorenko. Fedorenko confirmed incident to me appeared unfazed the group, he said, had already left danger zone before any airstrike could hit

Ukraine carried out at least 3 attacks on Druzhba oil pipeline, which delivers Russian oil to Hungary & Slovakia, temporarily disrupting ops. Szijjarto did not name commander hit by the ban, Balazs Orban, Hungarian prime minister's political director, confirmed for Hungarian news outlet 444, measure targets Robert Brovdi, commander of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces. Brovdi, who is Hungarian descent & known by call sign "Madyar," has confirmed his branch was responsible for drone strikes against Druzhba, including latest one carried out on Aug. 21, which targeted Unecha pumping station in Bryansk Oblast.
The Hungarian foreign minister described the strike as "an attack on Hungary’s sovereignty," saying it "endangered our energy security and nearly (forced) the use of our strategic reserves." "Ukraine knows very well that Druzhba pipeline is vital for Hungary’s & Slovakia’s energy supply & that such strikes harm us far more than Russia," Szijjarto said on X. Brovdi dismissed Budapest's decision, said the Hungarian leadership shares responsibility for Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities by "filling their own dirty pockets with sanctioned cheap raw materials." "I am Ukrainian & I will arrive in my father’s homeland after you," the commander said on his Telegram channel. "There are enough true Hungarians in Hungary, and one day, they will be sick to death of you."
In his statement, Szijjarto made no mention of the Russian overnight mass drone and missile attack on Kyiv on Aug. 28, which killed at least 18 people, including four children, and injured almost 40 others.
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Budapest "is on the wrong side of history." "Peter, if the Russian pipeline is more important to you than the Ukrainian children killed by Russia this morning, this is moral decay," he wrote on X."If Hungary has indeed closed entry into Hungary and the entire Schengen zone to one of Ukraine’s military commanders, who is an ethnic Hungarian and a citizen of Ukraine, this can only cause outrage," President Volodymyr Zelensky said, adding Foreign Ministry has been instructed to clarify the issue and "respond accordingly."
The Druzhba pipeline, one of the world's largest, carries Russian oil directly to Hungary and Slovakia — the only EU countries still buying Russian crude through the system. In July, they imported $232 million and $196 million worth of oil, respectively. Hungary, widely seen as the most Russia-friendly govt in the EU, has repeatedly opposed Brussels' attempts to fully halt Russian energy imports and threatened to block Ukraine's path to EU membership. Kyiv regularly carries out attacks on military industrial facilities in Russia, targeting Russian oil infrastructure to undermine Moscow's revenue streams a weaken ability to wage war in Ukraine.

Ukrainian military intelligence (HUR) damaged a Russian Buyan-M-class small missile ship, a carrier of Kalibr cruise missiles, Russian-occupied Crimea in the Azov Sea on Aug. 28, HUR reported.
According to agency, during os, fighters from HUR’s special unit "Prymary" damaged ship’s radar system using a drone strike, while special forces launched an attack directly on missile carrier. The missile ship, stationed in Temryuk Bay and ready to launch Kalibr missiles, was forced to retreat from its patrol zone after attack, HUR said agency published purported drone footage of attack on the vessel
The Buyan-M-class ship, also designated Project 21631, is a small but heavily armed corvette capable of operating in shallow waters, vessel was among first Russian surface ships used to launch Kalibr missiles. Repeated Ukrainian attacks using naval drones, missiles, and long-range drones have forced Kremlin to reduce its naval presence in occupied Crimea. Ukraine has destroyed several Russian vessels, including the Caesar Kunikov landing ship, the Sergei Kotov patrol ship, the Ivanovets missile corvette, and multiple high-speed landing crafts. HUR also claimed on Aug. 21 that it had struck a Russian patrol boat in Black Sea near occupied town of Zaliznyi Port in Kherson Oblast, killing five crew members.

Azerbaijan officially launched production of Soviet-standard artillery shells are now sending them to Ukrainian Armed Forces. And as Russians launched a deliberate strike campaign against Azerbaijani facilities in Ukraine, they have invertedly opened up a new source of critical munitions for Ukraine’s underused artillery fleet. Azerbaijan is producing 122 millimeter 152 millimeter shells compatible w/Ukraine’s remaining Soviet-era artillery systems, such as the D-30 and Msta-B. These weapons still make up a significant portion of Ukraine’s inventory as over 350 systems remain in use, but their ops output has dropped due to limited ammo, as NATO partners have focused on supplying 155 millimeter rounds to Ukraine army systems sent by West, Ukraine’s access to Soviet-standard calibers has remained constrained, leaving entire artillery units either dormant or drastically underused. Now, with Azerbaijan entering picture, equation changes, as Ukrainian officials estimate if just half of inactive systems are resupplied & redeployed, overall artillery firepower could increase by 20% to 30% in some sectors, further achieve this, Azerbaijani Avia-Agregat facility handling production has been upgraded with Turkish-built Lasko-1000 and Lasko-350 presses to meet a production output of several thousand shells per day. Azerbaijani outlets also report that negotiations are underway w/Bulgarian defense firms to scale up casing manufacturing capacity is expected to expand greatly as local expertise and supply chains mature.
New shell production comes at a time when Russia start to target Azerbaijani infrastructure inside Ukraine. Recently, Russian drones struck Svitanok Oil Trade depot in Odesa, a key facility owned by an Azerbaijani state oil company called Socar. Ten days later, another wave of drones hit same depot, damaging fuel tanks, technical buildings, pipeline connections, also targeting deliberate & consistent, but Azerbaijan didn’t back down as hours after 2nd strike, President Ilham Aliyev reaffirmed energy co-ops with Ukraine would continue regardless of Russian interference. Two days later, he ordered 2 million dollars in electrical equipment to be sent to Ukraine to help rebuild damaged power networks. This was not a neutral posture it was a clear political signal Baku will not be deterred by Russian pressure. The real turning point came weeks earlier, Russian missile struck area around Azerbaijan’s embassy in Kyiv, killing injuring civilians, attack came immediately after Aliyev made public statements backing Zelenskyy, was widely interpreted as a threat meant to pull Azerbaijan back into line. Instead, it seems to have hardened Baku’s stance, b'cos rather to backtrack, Azerbaijan accelerated both political ,& material support. What followed was a deliberate sequence of escalations, first a diplomatic strike, then economic target, now a direct military response through arms supply.
Baku’s decision to mass-produce shells for Ukraine reflects a deeper calculus, as these calibers are still used by Azerbaijan’s own army as well. Any expansion of shell production now gives country an insurance policy if tensions with Russia escalate. Should deterrence fail, Azerbaijan could immediately redirect its manufacturing output for its own needs. As such, Azerbaijan is essentially taking same stance as Ukraine’s Western allies are gradually adopting. Production capacity created today for Kyiv could be used tomorrow to defend yourself or your allies, be it Azerbaijan, the Baltics, Poland or Finland. Overall, Russia struck Azerbaijan’s energy assets to intimidate & isolate another post-Soviet neighbor, Result has been the opposite. Azerbaijan now shipping artillery shells to Ukraine, scaling up defense industry & aligning itself more closely with Western security system, move restores part of Ukraine’s Soviet-era firepower & sends a message to Moscow threats no longer guaranteed compliance. For Azerbaijan and others on Russia’s periphery, the path forward is not neutrality, it is preparation.

On August 14, 2025, North Korea sent over 50 T-90 tanks, APCs, and suicide drones into eastern Ukraine, but column rolled straight into a deadly trap of mines, Bohdana artillery, T-84 Oplots, Bayraktar TB2 drones, and infantry ambushes. In less than two hours, 42 vehicles were destroyed, hundreds of troops killed or captured, & commander taken alive. Report was shared with Western allies, the US Navy and NATO observers, it proved how preparation and timing can crush superior numbers, and even the US Navy acknowledged the strategic message.
