In a twist, Anwar claims Harapan has the numbers to form govt
GE15 | Despite not winning enough parliamentary seats to form the government on its own, Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim said the coalition has the numbers to do so.
“I wish to inform you that as a majority bloc, we have received support to form a government subject to the normal process. Majority means more than 111,” he told reporters at the Grand Dorsett Hotel in Subang Jaya this morning.
However, he did not say who is supporting Harapan to form the government.
“I am only able to speak on behalf of Harapan.
“Subsequent issues involving other parties (can only be revealed) after we submit (evidence of support) to the Agong,” he said.
Asked if Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has thrown support behind Harapan, he said: “Of course, we welcome the participation of all parties to be inclusive, but I’m not at liberty to say more.”
Harapan supporters camped out at the hotel car park cheered and celebrated the announcement.
Simple majority
Harapan, which took 82 seats, has won the most number of seats but this is not enough to form a government on its own.
This includes Gopeng, whose official results have yet to be announced but where the Harapan candidate is likely the winner.
It needs 111 seats to form a simple majority.
GPS has won 22 seats. GPS and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) with eight seats earlier declared the formation of a Borneo bloc that will move together.

Riduan Rubin is sole independent winner
KUALA LUMPUR: Riduan Rubin created a shock when he became the only independent candidate to emerge victorious in the 15th general election (GE15) after winning the Tenom parliamentary seat in Sabah.
Riduan won with a majority of 1,108 votes after obtaining 10,027 votes to defeat Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Noorita Sual (8,919 votes), GRS-BN’s Jamawi Ja’afar (8,625), Warisan’s Ukim Buandi (992) and independent candidate Peggy Chaw Zhi Ting (86).
The former Tenom Bersatu youth chief quit the party prior to his nomination as an independent candidate. However, a few days after his nomination, he joined Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM), whose president Peter Anthony failed to be a candidate for the same seat after his nomination was rejected by the Election Commission (EC).
GE15 also witnessed some first-timers emerging victorious, among them Khlir Mohd Nor (PN-PAS), Adam Adli Abd Halim (PH-PKR), Rodiyah Sapiee of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Kalam Salan (PN-Bersatu) and Lim Hui Ying (PH-DAP).
Khlir wrested the Ketereh parliamentary seat from BN when he polled 40,542 votes to beat his nearest challenger, Marzuani Ardila Ariffin (BN-Umno), who is also the Kelantan Umno Puteri chief, with a majority of 23,107 votes.
Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) chief Adam obtained 39,418 votes for an 8,638 majority win in the Hang Tuah Jaya parliamentary seat in Melaka against Mohd Ridhwan (BN), Sheikh Ikhzan Sheikh Salleh (Pejuang) and Azrudin Md Idris (PN-Bersatu).
Rodiyah, meanwhile, garnered 18,668 votes in the Batang Sadong parliamentary seat in Sarawak to defeat Lahaji Lahiya (PH-Amanah) with a majority of 14,893 votes.
In Selangor, Kalam (PN-Bersatu) obtained 17,973 votes to win the Sabak Bernam parliamentary seat with a majority of 5,056 votes.
Meanwhile, Hui Ying, who is also DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng’s sister, won the Tanjong parliamentary seat in Penang after polling 31,968 votes to beat two other candidates with a 28,754 majority.

Resign, Johor MB tells Zahid after BN’s loss
PETALING JAYA: Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi has called for Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to resign following Barisan Nasional’s loss in the general election (GE15).
Onn Hafiz said Zahid should follow his predecessor Najib Razak’s example and resign.
Najib, the former prime minister, relinquished his post in the party after the coalition lost in the 2018 general election (GE14).
In a Facebook post, Onn Hafiz said it was clear that the Malays have rejected Umno.
“Umno and BN only won nine parliamentary seats in Johor and failed to win a single seat in Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Melaka, Kelantan and Terengganu.
“Even though it is difficult to accept, Umno leaders including myself need to listen to the people, who made their voices clear through the ballot box.”
Onn Hafiz said many good Umno, MCA and MIC leaders were sacrificed because the party refused to listen to its grassroots.
“We need to be bold in pushing for change for the sake of the party,” he said, adding this change needed to start now.
“If we do not change now, we will not win a single seat in the future.”
This, he said, was why Zahid needed to resign.
In yesterday’s polls, BN only managed to win 30 seats. Its rivals Pakatan Harapan (with Muda) won 82, while Perikatan Nasional won 73.

Hung assembly in Perak, BN plays kingmaker
Pengkalan, Perak - Election results in Perak have resulted in a hung state assembly, with BN in a position to be the kingmaker.
Neither Perikatan Nasional (PN) nor Pakatan Harapan has enough votes to form a state government, according to official results.
PN has 26 seats and Harapan has 22. BN has 11 seats, which comprises 10 seats won by Umno and one secured by MCA.
Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria says the Islamist party will be discussing the formation of a stable state government with “friends” from BN.
“However, we are clear that we will not be with Harapan. We are clear with our policy of ‘No Anwar, No DAP’. So no discussion with Harapan,” he says.
Thirty state seats are required to form a simple majority state government in Perak.

Hung assembly in Pahang
None of the coalitions which contested in the Pahang state election can win a simple majority, resulting in a hung state assembly.
Only 41 of the 42 seats were contested. The election for the Tioman state seat will be held on Dec 7 due to the death of a candidate.
Out of the 41 seats, the results of 36 seats have been announced.
According to the Election Commission's official result, BN, Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional (PN) have won 15, 14 and seven seats respectively.
Even if BN is able to win the remaining five seats, it will still not have enough numbers to secure a simple majority.

Annuar Musa: Those who fail should step down
“Those who fail should take responsibility and step down”. These are the words of former Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa.
Although he did not mention names, it could be construed as being aimed at Umno president and BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Annuar, who lost the Ketereh seat, also appeared to call for a revival of the Muafakat Nasional coalition following BN’s dismal performance.
“Don’t delay… set aside all ego…
“PN, BN, GPS, GRS and others who were one must now form a consensus (bermuafakat) and form a government. Save the country, religion, and race,” he says on Facebook.
In an earlier post, he laments that he his worst fears are coming true.
“We offered consensus (muafakat), but we were labelled disloyal. We urged not to split, but we suffered the consequences.
“Now where are you bringing us? To form alliances that we rejected? To violate the Umno general assembly and party decisions once more?
“Step down. Enough of this carnage, listen and understand the peoples’ demands,” he says. MKINI

Muhyiddin claims Perikatan in lead to form government, ‘but not with PH’
SHAH ALAM — Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has claimed his coalition to be ready to form the next federal administration with Sabah and Sarawak parties and others that subscribed to his coalition’s principles.
He also claimed that PN has received a letter from the Yang diPertuan Agong from Istana Negara setting the conditions for it to form the next government, while refusing to divulge its contents.
When he was pressed to identify PN’s possible partners, hundreds of supporters shouted ‘Tolak (Reject) BN (Barisan Nasional)’ and ‘Tolak (Ahmad) Zahid (Hamidi)’, the BN chairman.
“I have made a statement earlier that we are ready, we did not mention that we leave it to the wisdom of the highest leadership of the PN to decide,” he said, addressing the loud crowd.
Asked to clarify if there was a possibility of working with PH, Muhyiddin said no.
Until 3am today, PN was confirmed as winning 73 parliamentary seats, with six more yet to be officially announced.
Previously, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) said it will work with Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) to establish a Borneo bloc and form the federal government with a national coalition that can bring the most benefit to the two states.
Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor claimed to have spoken with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg and both had agreed to support a federal government that can bring stability to the nation and the two states.
Muhyiddin also claimed the reception from both GPS and GRS was encouraging.

PN to discuss with Sabah, S’wak parties to form govt, but says no to Harapan
Perikatan Nasional is ready to discuss with parties from Sabah and Sarawak tomorrow to form the federal government but it will not work with Pakatan Harapan.
PN chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin said the coalition will accept any party which can accept its principles to form a government that is stable and clean.
“To form a PN-led government, I will discuss with parties from Sabah and Sarawak soon.
“In guaranteeing stability, PN also welcomes any party which is ready to accept PN principles to form a clean, stable and caring government,” he added.
“No Pakatan Harapan,” Muhyiddin told reporters when asked if PN will consider the opposition coalition led by Anwar Ibrahim.
The Pagoh MP earlier announced that PN has secured 73 parliamentary seats so far, and still waiting for the results of six more seats in which votes are being counted by the Election Commission.
“We are going to hold discussions tomorrow, and hopefully by tomorrow evening, we can finalise (our decision),” he added.
Borneo bloc
Meanwhile, it was reported by Malay Mail that Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will work together to form a “Borneo bloc”.
This is to help form a federal government with a national coalition that can bring stability to the nation and the most benefit to the two states, the report said.
The report quoted Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor saying he has spoken to Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg on the matter and reached a consensus.
However, he said GRS could not decide which coalition to work with yet, because the full results have yet to be announced by the Election Commission. MKINI

KUCHING — With Malaysia voting in the country's first-ever hung parliament following its general elections on Saturday (Nov 19), parties in Sabah and Sarawak are well on track to play the widely touted kingmaker's role in deciding who to back to form the next government.
But while there was little surprise in the performance of key political parties in Sabah and Sarawak, which together make up a quarter of the 222 parliamentary seats, the worse-than-expected performance of ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) could force the East Malaysian states to think harder on whom they would partner with, say analysts.
In Sarawak, the main coalition Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), swept 22 out of the 31 parliamentary seats it contested in.
This was slightly higher than its showing at the previous general election in 2018, where it had swept 19 seats while in a formal alliance with Barisan Nasional (BN).
In Sabah, the main ruling coalition Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) took 12 out of 13 seats that it contested. It did not contest in the 2018 election as it was formed in 2020, but analysts had previously told TODAY that multi-cornered fight in Sabah would favour GRS and its electoral partner BN in Sabah.
Leaders of the two coalitions that garnered the most votes at the polls have wasted no time in openly courting the East Malaysian states for support.
Speaking at a press conference early Sunday morning, Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson and former PM Muhyiddin Yassin said his coalition, which has obtained 73 seats as of 4am, was ready to discuss with parties from Sabah and Sarawak about forming the federal government.
Meanwhile, ex-DPM Anwar Ibrahim, chairman of Pakatan Harapan (PH) which has scored 82 seats, said in a press conference later that he had secured agreement from “several quarters” to form the federal government. He did not specify who he had made the agreement with.
But for now, the East Malaysian leaders are coy over their preference.
Speaking earlier at a press conference in Sarawak’s capital of Kuching shortly after midnight, GPS chairman and Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Tun Openg was evasive on which peninsular coalition his party would join, saying that this would be “decided later”.
His answer was in response to a question on whether GPS has decided on who it would cooperate with, given that PH and PN were on their way to winning the most seats.
When pressed on how soon he would come to a decision on which coalition to work with, Mr Abang Johari said the decision would be made until one of the coalitions contacted him.
“So far, no one has contacted me. Maybe they’re still counting votes over there,” he said.
Over in Sabah, GRS chairman Hajiji Noor said he and Mr Abang Johari had agreed to discuss closer collaboration between the two parties as “a Borneo bloc”.
“This is to ensure we support the federal government that will be beneficial to Sabah and Sarawak,” he said in a press conference.
