PETALING JAYA: DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng has apologised to Sarawak premier Abang Johari Openg and the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government for past remarks that “may have offended” them.

“The future of the country is more important.

“Let us make a fresh start to cooperate to preserve the diversity, inclusiveness and unity of our multiracial and multicultural society as well as protect our Federal Constitution for the benefit of all in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.

In 2019, Lim, who was then the finance minister, had drawn flak for saying Sarawak would go bankrupt in three years if GPS continued to govern the state.

He had said Sarawak’s reserves of RM31 billion would be all spent in three years if GPS continued to allocate an annual state budget of RM11 billion.

Then Sarawak deputy chief minister, the late James Masing, was among the state leaders who had slammed Lim for his remarks.

Earlier today, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said he met Abang Johari and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Dr Sim Kui Hian in the morning where they held a “friendly discussion”.

Loke also said he had apologised to the GPS leaders over past statements by DAP that offended the Sarawak government and people.

PETALING JAYA: DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook says he has made an open apology to Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders during a meeting with them this morning.

In a statement, Loke said he met GPS chairman Abang Johari Openg and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Dr Sim Kui Hian, where they held a “friendly” discussion.

“I had informed the Sarawak premier that if there were any statements made by DAP leaders previously that offended the Sarawak government and people, I, representing DAP, apologise openly,” he said.

Loke said he hoped this morning’s meeting with the two GPS leaders would open a new page for Malaysia’s political landscape, towards building greater understanding and cooperation for the nation’s sake.

Now GRS says will leave it to King to decide on next PM

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) chairman Hajiji Noor says the coalition will leave it to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to decide on the next prime minister.

This appears to be a departure from its earlier stand to back Muhyiddin Yassin.

In a statement, Hajiji said there was a need for a federal government to be formed immediately, and the party would follow the advice of the King on the formation of a unity government.

Therefore, Hajiji said, GRS will follow Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) in complying with the King’s decision for a unity government, for the sake of national stability and the wellbeing of the people.

The Sabah Bersatu chief added that GRS wanted the unity government to be inclusive and involve the Sabah and Sarawak state governments.

Umno man commends Loke, Guan Eng for apologising to GPS

PETALING JAYA: An Umno Youth leader has commended DAP duo, Loke Siew Fook and Lim Guan Eng for apologising to Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Sarawakians for past comments that may have offended them.

Wan Agyl Wan Hassan said it was time for Malaysians to put their differences aside and focus on national interests.

“We need to be more mature in politics and this (apologies) is both an example of this, and an opportunity for us to move forward as a nation,” he told FMT.

“I hope the spirit of the apologies will be reflected in the actions of other party leaders and supporters. The same applies to us and other political party leaders and members as well,” said the federal territories Umno Youth information chief.

Wan Agyl said Malaysia needs to move on from the “old, divisive politics”.

“We need to be mature, admit when we are wrong and move forward.”

Sabah, Sarawak must be part of unity govt, says Kitingan

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) deputy chairman Jeffrey Kitingan has come out in support of the King’s call for a unity government.

The president of Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR), a component of GRS, said his party was on board with the King’s proposal to have a unity government to resolve the political impasse.

“A unity government is the best solution I can see right now. However, this government must include the elected governments of Sabah and Sarawak for it to be effective and truly inclusive.

“The unity government mechanism must be clearly established for it to work,” the Sabah deputy chief minister told FMT.

Kitingan said GRS and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) has 29 seats together, while two independent MPs and one from Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) have agreed to work together as one entity.

Now PN agrees to King’s unity govt proposal

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional (PN) has made an about-turn and says its Supreme Council has agreed to consider the King’s proposal on the formation of a unity government.

PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said this was for the sake of national stability and the people’s welfare.

He said this followed a PN Supreme Council meeting today on the formation of a unity federal government.

On Tuesday, PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said the King had asked PN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) to work together in forming the government.

However, he said PN turned this down as the coalition was firm about not cooperating with PH.

Who is Malaysia’s King and why is he picking the prime minister?

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian King Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah is in the spotlight as he mulls his choice on who will be the country’s next prime minister, after an election left no party with a majority in parliament and coalition talks failed.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah on Tuesday said he would “soon” decide between opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and former premier Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin after neither politician was able to gain enough support to form a coalition following Saturday’s elections.

IS IT ALWAYS THE KING’S CHOICE?

No. Elections normally determine who will be prime minister in Malaysia under a parliamentary system.

But the constitution does give him the power to appoint a prime minister that he believes can command a majority among the lawmakers.

Malaysia’s kings have rarely used that power, but political instability in the last two years has prompted the monarch to pick a premier.

The monarchy has played a more influential role since 2020 amid the decline of the once-dominant Barisan Nasional alliance and its leading party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO).

Barisan had led every government since independence from British colonial rule in 1957 up until its electoral defeat in 2018. It was voted out after a multibillion-dollar scandal at state fund 1MDB.

HAS THIS HAPPENED BEFORE?

Yes. His Majesty has appointed two previous prime ministers, though this is the first time it has happened after an election failed to produce a clear winner.

The king appointed Muhyiddin prime minister in February 2020 when then-premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad resigned due to coalition infighting.

His Majesty took the unusual step of meeting with all of the country’s 222 lawmakers after Mahathir’s resignation to determine who had a majority to form a new government, eventually picking former Mahathir ally Muhyiddin Yassin.

Less than a year later, after Muhyiddin’s own coalition fell apart, the king asked lawmakers to submit a letter each on who they backed as PM and decided to appoint the next premier – Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who was in power until the recent election.

Anwar sworn in as Malaysia’s 10th PM

PETALING JAYA: Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar Ibrahim has been sworn in as Malaysia’s 10th prime minister.

The Tambun MP took his oath of office before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, at Istana Negara.

Earlier today, Istana Negara said the King had consented to Anwar’s appointment to the top post following discussions with the Malay rulers this morning.

The King had initially asked PH and Perikatan Nasional to form a unity government, but Muhyiddin Yassin, the latter’s chairman, said he turned this down as PN could not work with PH.

While Gabungan Parti Sarawak and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah initially backed Muhyiddin as prime minister, the two Bornean coalitions eventually said they would follow the King’s wish for a unity government.
