The Chin Brotherhood Alliance says it is close to seizing Kyindwe town near Magwe Region and Rakhine State, despite the arrival of junta reinforcements.

Sleepless in Naypyitaw: Myanmar Junta Leader Lives in Fear of Assassination.
Worried about ever-present threat of drone and rocket attacks on the capital, & nation assassination attempts, Myanmar’s most hated top general is by all accounts nervous wreck these days, & rumored to take the anti-anxiety drug alprazolam every night.
Lately, coup leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing has been avoiding limelight, concerns his itinerary will leaked to opposition forces.

Naypyitaw is heavily guarded and has been shielded from fighting has raged elsewhere across country. Key ministries, HQ & Min Aung Hlaing’s residence are believed to be equipped with anti-drone and other air defense systems. where Min Aung Hlaing and his family were staying, not known whether they were residence the incident shocked Min Aung Hlaing and his entire family, close to family members said. The next day, Min Aung Hlaing disappeared, leaving only his wife Kyu Kyu Hla and her bodyguards to show up. Inside sources said Min Aung Hlaing flew to Meiktila Airbase in Mandalay Region, instead. Meiktila is home to Myanmar Air Force’s central command, a large number of regime forces are stationed at the airbase. He, (Min Aung Hlaing) have disappeared from public scene, is not alone in being out of view.

His No. 2, Vice Senior General Soe Win, commander-in-chief of army & deputy head of State Admin Council (junta calls itself), disappeared for nearly a mth after an April 3 visit to Ba Htoo, a garrison town in southern Shan State, finally reappearing on state TV’s news (Mon) unconfirmed reports, he injured in by drone strike April 9, resistance forces attacked tHQ of Southeast Command in Mon State’s Mawlamyine.

Myanmar Junta Counteroffensive Yet to Breach Karen Defenses: KNU

Large numbers of junta troops advancing on Myawaddy on the Thai border have not breached most anti-regime defensive lines, according to the Karen National Union (KNU).

The regime in mid-April dispatched around 500 troops as part of the Operation Aung Zeya counteroffensive to retake Thingan Nyi Naung village and Myawaddy.

The troops equipped with armored vehicles, tanks, artillery and a mobile bridge reached the Dawna hills along the Asian Highway beyond Kawkareik town. The regime provided air support.

Junta troops occupied the Dawna hills after anti-regime forces deployed withdrew, according to a resistance fighter.

“The Karen National Liberation Army [KNLA] and Karen National Defense Organization are deployed in Thingan Nyi Naung village. It will be difficult for the regime to take it,” he said.

Padoh Saw Kalel Say of the KNU said junta troops are attempting to advance on other routes along the Asian Highway but anti-regime forces have prepared defenses.

“Most regime troops are coming by the Asian Highway but others are coming from other directions. But we have made preparations,” he said.

The KNLA and resistance allies on April 5 seized a junta battalion headquarters in Thingan Nyi Naung, sparking the regime’s Operation Aung Zeya.

Deputy junta chief Soe Win is overseeing the operation at the Southeastern Command with 55 Division troops from northern Shan State to Karen State via Mon State.

The regime has also reinforced Mon State with troops arriving from northern Shan State, according to the Mon State Defense Force chairman, Thiri Mon Chan. The regime also carried out counteroffensives in Kawkareik and Kawbein towns along the Gyaing River. It has told displaced residents to return, and provided them with supplies as psychological warfare, said residents.

The regime retook Infantry Battalion 275 in Myawaddy with assistance from the military-affiliated Karen State Border Guard Force.

The sudden recapture of the battalion misled people about the anti-regime forces, observers say. Former major Tin Lin Aung, a defector from the military, urged people to support anti-regime forces despite junta ploys. The defense against the counter offensive depends on their access to weapons, ammunition and food,” he said.

The regime still has three key hilltop bases in Lay Kay Kaw, Waw Lay and Thae Thaw Bo in the area where KNU Brigade 6 is active. The bases are cut off by anti-regime forces and junta reinforcements cannot reach them, said Tin Lin Aung. Anti-regime forces will be able to retain the territory by ambushing junta reinforcements, said military analysts.

The military still holds state capital Sittwe but AA fighters have seized territory in surrounding districts, including bases on the border with India and Bangladesh.

A video released by AA's media channel said group had captured "Military Operations Command 15" town of Buthidaung, around 90 kilometres (55 miles) north of Sittwe.

The video did not say when its fighters had captured site but local media have reported regular clashes around Buthidaung in recent days. "The video record deputy commander of MOC 15 after a certain period of siege," read a message published in Burmese, Chinese and English.

After a "final assault" the junta troops had "faced total defeat and surrendered,"
Images showed a long line of men, some wearing what appeared to be military uniforms, walking single file through a field.

Some were in shorts and T-shirts and sandals while others were not wearing any footwear. Some shots showed women and children accompanying the men.

One man with a bandage around his knee was limping and some were being carried in makeshift stretchers. Video also showed around 200 people sitting in rows in a clearing and men in uniform and guns watching over them.

AFP has attempted to contact a junta spokesman for comment.

AA is one of several armed ethnic minority groups in Myanmar's border regions, many of whom have battled the military since independence from Britain in 1948 over autonomy and control of lucrative resources.
The AA claims to be fighting for autonomy for the state's ethnic Rakhine population.

In 2019 clashes between the AA and the military roiled the region and displaced around 200,000 people. In 2017 the military launched a crackdown on the Rohingya minority there that is now the subject of a United Nations genocide court case.

Since Nov outbreak, fighting had spread to 15 of Rakhine state's 17 townships, UN's human rights chief said last mth. Hundreds have been killed or wounded and more than 300,000 displaced, it said. - AFP

Myanmar junta rebuffs Cambodia ex-leader Hun Sen’s request to meet Suu Kyi.

YANGON – Myanmar’s junta on May 8 denied a request by former Cambodian leader Hun Sen for talks with democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been detained since a 2021 coup.

Ms Suu Kyi has largely been hidden from view since the military detained her as it seized power in a putsch that has plunged the country into turmoil.

The junta has rebuffed numerous requests by foreign leaders and diplomats to meet the Nobel laureate, 78, who has reportedly suffered health problems during more than three years in detention.

On May 7, Mr Hun Sen, who ruled Cambodia for nearly four decades before stepping down in 2023, said he had requested a meeting with Ms Suu Kyi during video talks with junta chief Min Aung Hlaing.

In an audio message released by the military’s information team, spokesman Zaw Min Tun said the junta had “no reason to facilitate it at this moment”.

The military would hold promised and much-delayed fresh elections “without fail”, he said, without giving details.

War inches closer to Pyin Oo Lwin, a military haven. Persistent anti-junta offensives have brought resistance fighters closer to the ‘military town,’ which has been largely sheltered from the open violence perpetrated by the coup regime throughout the country.

While most of Myanmar is bakening in a scorching heatwave, temperatures have risen only moderately in Pyin Oo Lwin,

Mandalay Region, a city 3,000 feet above sea level that is famous for its lush, shady forests, mild weather, and diverse abundance of flowers. T he settlement became an unofficial “summer capital” under the British—who gave the hill settlement the name “Maymyo”—and since independence has retained its reputation as a retreat from Mandalay, Yangon, and other lowland cities during the hot season.

Its also home to long-established military training facilities including the Defence Services Academy (DSA) founded in 1954, it is the military’s premier institution for officer training.

Until recently, the combined hill resort and garrison town had also been spared from the Myanmar regime’s escalating war with ethnic armed organisations and pro-democracy resistance forces.

Heightened security protects high-ranking junta officials said.

Myanmar Junta Bombs Magwe Monastery
MAY 11, 2024 -- At least 14 people, who were gathered at a Saw Township monastery for a meeting, were killed with the death toll expected to rise.

Monastery in Saw Township, Magwe Region, on Thursday morning, killing at least 14 people and injuring 30. Akyi Pan Malun village was reportedly hit by a 500-pound bomb, destroying the entire monastery and burning its grounds “Many people were meeting in the monastery to discuss plans to establish transport links in the township,” said a resident.

A volunteer leader assisting residents told The Irrawaddy on Friday: “We found 14 dead bodies but not all of my team members have returned yet. Deliberately targeting civilians is a crime. We will take action against the regime one day.

Residents expect to find more bodies in the wreckage and many people are still missing.
The monastery’s abbot was injured. Junta drones had been seen above the village in the preceding days, according to residents.

A Kyi Pan Malun is in resistance-held territory about 12km northeast of Kyaukhtu town on the Pakokku road. The area was without internet and phone connections in the days before the airstrike. Residents say internet blackouts often precede airstrikes.

Myanmar’s Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Moved to House Arrest at Military Facility in Naypyitaw, also jailed former leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was recently moved from Naypyitaw Prison too to house arrest, sources told The Irrawaddy.

She has been moved to house arrest at the 6th Military Operations Command (MOC) headquarters in Pyinmana overseen by the junta’s Naypyitaw Command, at the as time ousted President U Win Myint was detained there during his trial after the 2021. As War Rages in Myanmar’s South, Coastal front
some Villages Are Caught in cross fire.

MAY 15, 2024. A Conscription Crackdown is Rolling Through Myanmar’s 2nd-Largest City. A team of 10 security personnel including two officers are guarding the Nobel laureate at 6th MOC, according to the sources, who added that team is headed by a military intelligence officer. 6th MOC is located in Thae Phyu Village in Pyinmana Township. Its commander is a brigadier general who concurrently serves as a general staff officer at War Office HQ.

Since Friday, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s grocery list has included items for one person, previously, she requested groceries not only for herself but also for people living with her in Naypyitaw Prison.“For eg, she asked for a traditional Myanmar snack during Thingyan Festival, she asked for portions for six. When she asked for other foods, she asked for larger portions to share with others,” the Irrawaddy has learned that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was allowed to take her belongings from prison this time, prompting speculation that move will be permanent.

The transfer to house arrest follows the junta’s denial last week of a request by former Cambodian prime PM Hun Sen for talks with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, in April she had been transferred from prison to prison, reports were never confirmed by junta, only that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her deposed President U Win Myint were among elderly prisoners given special care amid the summer heatwave.

For week after Feb. 1, 2021 coup, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was kept at State Counselor’s residence in Naypyitaw. On Feb. 9, she was moved to another house of deputy commander of Naypyitaw, where she remained. After trial—condemned by rights groups as a sham designed to shut her out of politics—she was moved to a cell in a standalone building in Naypyitaw Prison to serve a 27-year sentence imposed by a junta court.

Since she has been held incommunicado, including from her son and lawyers. The regime has denied requests from international envoys of the UN and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to meet with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, though it allowed then-Thai foreign minister Don Pramudwinai to meet with her last year. According to the regime, the two talked in private for nearly one-and-a-half hours and the details of their conversation were kept.

Effort to conscript young people for military service in Myanmar facing intense resistance from young people, their families, and the local administrators who help select conscripts, the military is turning to a foolproof method of replenishing its ranks: recruitment at gunpoint.

KIA Seizes Myanmar Junta Base in Gold, Amber Mining Hub in Kachin.

The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and allied resistance forces seized a junta military outpost in a gold- and amber-rich part of Tanai Township, Kachin State on Thursday morning after six days of attacks, according to a statement from the KIA.

The KIA and its allies launched an attack on the junta’s Nambyu outpost in Nambyu Village in Tanai on May 11. The outpost was manned by over 70 junta troops from Infantry Battalions 297 and 260, according to the KIA, the armed wing of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO).

KIA spokesperson Colonel Naw Bu confirmed the seizure of the junta base on Thursday, adding that it is the fourth outpost the KIA and its allies have seized in Tanai Township since they launched a wider offensive in the area on March 7.“Nambyu is one outposts used to control areas where gold & amber mines are located. Therefore, its important outpost, as junta’s military has earned a lot of money from those mining hubs,” he said.

However, at least four other junta outposts remain in the area, he added. On March 7, the KIA and its allies, which include the Kachin State People’s Defense Force and the ethnic Arakan Army (AA) based in Rakhine State, launched coordinated attacks on junta bases in Sumprabum and Tanai townships and along the road linking the state capital Myitkyina with Bhamo. On March 18, they seized a junta outpost to the north in Namkawn Village, Tanai Township, where troops from Infantry Battalion 297 were stationed.
